Byerly Cemetery Location: On Ferrer Farm, Warm Springs, Virginia, Pike. Bath County OWNERS: “The inhabitants here of”. DESCRIPTION: This abandoned grave yard with fifty or more graves is near the top of a hill unfenced, and in an open field, over looking Mossey Cree. It is now covered with small trees, briars and under brush. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Some of the prominent early settlers of Virginia are buried here among whom are Samuel M. Miller who came to Virginia prior to 1800: and settled on this farm, and established and operated the first Iron furnace or Smelting plant in this part of Virginia, obtaining the iron ore on the farm and other adjacent territory. It was later called “Ferrers Furnace”, as Joseph Ferrer, acquired the property and was operated during the Civil War 1860-5. The product being used for war purposes, which “ore” was made, and shipt until about 1880, when the furnace equipment was transferred to a point on the “South River” – now called Grottoes – and combined with another Forge and Foundry Co., and called “Valley Forge” which was operated successfully for several years. Daniel Boone was said to have been first cousin to Samuel Miller and lived here two or three years and was connected with him in this business. Samuel M. Miller departed this life Aug. 23th 1844 age 31 years 25 da. Elizabeth Miller wife of James Miller died Feb. 24th 1839 George M. Miller died Apr. 27th 1835 age 35 yr. 6 mo. & 6 da. Hannah Miller Born Feb. 15th 1777 (balance of inscription obliterated) James Robinson for Sept. 1776 Died 1835 Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Patsy Estill Born July 11th 1784 died Sept. 15th 1852 age 68 yr. 2 mo. 24 Da.
