SHRIEVES (SHREVE) AND JANE C. HUPMAN (transcriber notes in parenthesis) Know all men by these presents, that we, James S. Shrieves (Shreve) and Jared M. Steuart are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Virginia, for the use of the Commonwealth, in the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this 16th day of Nov A.D. 1846. The condition of the above obligation is such, that wheras a marriage is shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound James S. Shrieves (Shreve) and Jane C. Hupman of Bath county; if, therefore, there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage, then the obligation to be void-otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. James S. Waters stated marriage conducted November 1846 (no day given) Civil War record of James S. Shreve Taken from Application for admission to United Daughters of the Confederacy for Hallie V. McLain Calhoun: " I, R.N. Shreve, a son of James Stewart Shreve and Uncle of Hallie McLain Callhoun do hereby certify that James Steuart Shreve (my father) served as a Confederate Soldier during the Civil War, enlisting at McDowell, Virginia, and was under command of Capt. John Bird. Became sick with dropsy and was given leave of absence. After regaining his health was mustered into service again and taken prisoner, and was held as such for about eighteen months at Columbus, Ohio." Records show James S. Shreve belonged to Company B; 31st Regiment, Virginia. He is buried at Lansing Cemetery, Lansing, WV and his grave is marked with a bronze veteran's marker installed by his great great granddaughter and her husband, Merry and Eddie Hanning, on July 13, 1996. Obituary of James S. Shreve from Fayette Tribune, Oak Hill, WV (transcriber notes are in parenthesis) "James S. Schreve was born January 24, 1826 in Highland County (Bath County at the time), Virginia. He was called to the eternal life January 13, 1905, aged 78 years 11 months, 19 days. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Atkinson at Lansing, W.Wa. He was united in marriage to Miss Jane Hupman by Rev. L.E. Watters, November 24, 1846 to whom were given four sons and two daughters namely Robert Shreve, Red Star (WV); John Shreve, Hico, W.Va.; Peter Shreve, Fayetteville, W.Va.; Mrs. Mary (Jesse G.) McLaine (McLain), Oak Hill (WV) and Mrs. Sarah (Luther) Atkinson at whose home the deceased has lived for five years. He served as s soldier in the Confederate army of the Civil War. His good wife went to her eternal reward August 1, 1896. He gave himself to Christ in early manhood and remained a constant Christian until death." According to the death certificate for James S. Shreve on file in Fayette County, WV his cause of death was Chronic Intestinal Nephritis. The death certificate for Jane Hupman Shreve, also on file in Fayette County, WV, gives Cancer as her cause of death. Jane is buried in the Breneman Cemetery, Country Club Road, Oak Hill, WV - her actual grave known only to God as it was never marked and any who knew the location are long since deceased. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bath County, Virginia Marriage Bonds MARRIAGE BOND - Jesse W.
