Holly Burial Site in Illinois - Bedford Co. VA The burial place of my second great grandfather who was born in Bedford county, Va. A few years ago, I traveled to Macoupin County, Illinois looking for the burial place of my 2nd great grandfather William Holly. At this point I only knew they had come from Illinois to Kansas by ox and wagon. Local cemetery books at the Carlinville Library said he was buried at Miller's Cemetery in Barr Township. We drove to the farm where the well kept old cemetery with a black wrought iron fence was located out in the pasture. With the farmer's permission, we drove to the gates and began walking about. There in the middle was a tombstone with the inscription WILLIAM HOLLY born 9-18-1816 and died 9-19-1872 and the words "born in the state of Virginia". A book on the history of Macoupin County, Illinois stated he was born in Bedford County, Virginia. Later I learned that he and his young family left Alleghany County, Virginia in 1848 and traveled by wagon to their new home in Macoupin County, Illinois. After his death, his family moved to Pottawatomie County, Ks.
