North side of road, 25 yards. Bedford County 100 yards from the house surrounded by an iron fence and in the midst of a corn field is the Watts burial ground. Mrs. S.H. Saunders, Peaks Road, Bedford, Va., says there are more graves than there are tombstones, there being distinguishable about 15 mounds when they first came there. Now the spot is so overgrown with myrtle and honeysuckle vines that they cannot be seen. Even a few of the markers were unreadable, others are: (No dates could be made out on these three stones. These are said to be the children of James Watts, Jr.) Francis Mabel Aged 1 year Hugh Pendleton Aged 8 months John Heber Aged 8 months A spire marker of white marble has the following inscriptions on each side. Richard D. Watts Born Dec’r. 28, 1793 Died Jan’y 17, 1848 No shadow rested on his brow, He uttered not a sigh. Gently he drew his parting breath And softly closed his eyes. Isabella E. Watts Wife of Richard D. Watts Born June 7, 1800 Died July 17, 1866 Sweet is the sleep our mother takes, Till in Christ Jesus she awakes. Then will her happy soul rejoice. To hear her blessed Savior’s voice. In memory of James Watts Born Jany. 20, 1767 Died Jany/ 25, 1828 in the 60th year of his age Here Rest In the hope of a Happy resurrection The mortal remains of Mary Beeman who died Sept. 2nd. A.D. 1821 Blessed are the dead who Die in the Lord. Born March 2nd. ... Oscar Bennet son of J.W. and Mary E.
