Selected McClain Records, 1854-1871 - Bedford Co. VA Bedford County, Virginia Court Order Book 31 October Court 1854 Page 490 William Dickerson qualifies as Administrator of Creed McClain. On the motion of William Dickinson who made oath and together with William Webb his security entered into and acknowledged bond in the penelty of four hundred dollars conditioned according to law. Certificate is granted him for obtain letters of administration on the estate of Creed McClain deceased in due form. Bedford Co., Virginia Records: B. 5, p. 545 & B. 19, p. 96 J.W. Payne and Frances McClain (23 day of Oct. 1860) Creed McClain died in 1854. Wm. Dickerson appointed administrator with Wm. Webb, his surety. Creed's children: James M. McClain, Charles McClain and Mary Booker McClain (infants). Creed McClain's estate was clear of debt his $600 of personal property to Wm. Dickerson, which he has never accounted for except for a small amount. Dickerson has been administrator of the estate for 16 years. Payne-McClain 27 Mar 1871 $200 Settlement Webb and Dickerson put up bond of $400. Wm. Dickerson was father of Frances McClain Payne. Mary Booker died about 2 or 3 years. After her father's death, Wm. took Frances and her three little children to live with him. Mary Booker continued to live with grandfather until her death. James M. McClain lived with him until 1961. Charles lived with him until this present year. He looked after Frances for 4 years - she is still in his debt, he blames J.W. Payne for this suit. 2 May 1871 Adjustments made all parties concerned.
