Rhoda Buford, Widow's App. for Pension, 1852 - Bedford Co. VA [National Archives] State of Virginia County of Bedford this 23rd day of July in the year 1852 personally appeared before me Jno. Clayton a Justice of the Peace in and for the County aforesaid Rhoda Buford aged Eighty eight years who being duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions of the act of Congress entitled "an act for the relief of certain survivors and widows of officers and soldiers of the Revolutionary Army approved July 29 1848" - that she is the widow of John Buford who was a private and Sergeant in the War of the Revolution, as will appear by a pension certificate dated 12th day of March 1836 and numbered 30.474 now in her possession that she swears to the declarations of her said husband for full particulars of his service as she knows little or nothing of the same herself. She further declares that she was married to the said John Buford on the 26th (?) day of December in the year 1786 that her husband the aforesaid John Buford died on the 11th day of February 1852 -- that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the 2nd of January 1800 to wit at the time above stated - she further swears that she is now a widow and that she has never before made any application for a pension her Rhoda X Buford mark Sworn to and subscribed on the day and year above mentioned before me Jno. Clayton J.P. State of Virginia } Bedford County } -- I Albon A. Arthur Clerk of the County Court of Said County, dohereby certify that at a Court held for said County at the Courthouse the 24.- day of May 1852 Satisfactory evidence was exhibited to Said Court that John Buford was a pensioner of the United States at the rate of Seventy dollars and thirty three cents per annum, that he was a resident of said County And State and died in the Said County and State on the 14th day of February in the year 1852, that he left a widow whose name is Rhoda Buford and Seven children to Wit Elizabeth Fields, Rhoda Carroll, Milly Fossty, Frances Cleaveland, Dolly Fossty, John Buford and Samuel Buford. And I further certify that John Clayton is and was at the time of signing the preceding certificate an acting Justice for Said County, duly Commissioned and qualified In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed the Seal of Said Court this 7th August 1852.
