Guthrie Sr., 89, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007. Born in Bedford County, Va., he had been a Hampton resident since 1951 and retired from the Newport News shipyard in 1981, after 30 years service. Mr. Guthrie was a 50 year member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he had served on many boards and in many capacities, including Senior Trustee of the church. He had also served as a Scout Master with Boy Scout Troop 78. Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Guthrie; parents, J.K. and Goldie Guthrie; five sisters; and four brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Linda G. Gallahan; son, Russell P. Guthrie Jr. and wife, Ruth; sisters, Belva Nemeth, and Tharon Meador; grandchildren, Clai Moore and wife, Melissa, Dana Brown and husband, Tommy, Sam Guthrie and wife, Heather, Jennifer Shaffer and husband, Jeff, and Craig Moore and wife, Trish; 11 great-grandchildren; and his special friends, Robert Bright, Lois Duke, and Don Gurley. Russell was loved and known by his family and friends for kindness, friendliness and being ready with a story at any time. His garden produced vegetables, which he gave to many, which was just one example of how he gave to those around him. A funeral service will be conducted at 11a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Downtown Hampton, by the Rev. David Cook and the Rev. Henry B. Sudduth. Interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Renovation Fund.
