Section 4. Military Records or service can be verified for Mordecai McClain only. It appears no other McClain associated with those in Bedford County VA served in War of 1812 the American Revolution, however, at the time of my search I was looking primarily for service by James or John. Here are transcripts of Mordecai's service: A. Muster Rolls: 1. File letter " Mc" 3rd (Dickinson's) Va. Militia. Mordicai McClain Private, Captain Joshua Early's Company of Infantry, attached to 3rd Regiment Virginia Militia.* War of 1812 Appears on "Company Muster Roll for Aug 16 to Oct 7, 1814, Roll not dated. Remark: Seventeen days pay allowed to return home --340 miles distant. 4. Pay-Master 10th Military District pay certificate: Baltimore 12 December 1814. 20.44 Dollars. I HEREBY CERTIFY, That there is due from the United States to Mordica McClain a Private in Captain Joshua Early's Company 3rd Regiment of Virginia Militia in the service of the United States, 20.44 dollars being the amount of his pay as appears from the Muster Rolls of said now in my possession, payable to him of his order. 20.64 - 1.75= 18.89 Note on back of certificate states" This bill is subject to a deduction of one dollar & seventy-five cents for pair of shoes furnished. Rich P Perkins." Note the discrepancy of amount of money owed on Company Pay Roll record (28.64) and amount paid, before the deduction for shoes (20.64).
