Will of Bartlett Dickerson, 1874 - Bedford County, Virginia Will Book 23, Page 58 Signed: December 4, 1874 Proved: January 28, 1878 I Bartlett Dickerson of the County of Bedford and the State of Virginia being of sound health both in body and mind do hereby make this my last will and testament. Art. 1st I desire that my any burial expenses and all my just debts shall be paid as soon as possible after my death. Art 2nd I desire that my two daughters, Betsy Ann Dickerson and Adeline Dickerson shall after the payment of the just debts and burial expenses have in equal shares all of my personal effects. Art 3rd I desire that my tract of land shall be divided by Clemmons Dickerson and his son Callohill or either of them or they failing to do so by Commissioners appointed by the Court for said purpose into four equal parts in value without regard to value of Buildings and that my daughter Betsy Ann Dickerson shall have first choice of said lots: that my daughter Adeline Dickerson shall have second choice of said lots: that my son McHenry Dickerson shall have third choice of said lots and that my son Smithing H. Dickerson shall have the fourth or last lot of said tract of land. Art. 4th In view of the fact that my daughter Dolly G. Dickerson the deceased wife of James Minter children are all provided with homes and the children of my daughter Narcessa Dickerson the wife of Joshua C. Hurt and herself also are provided with homes I omit to make any provision for them except that I remember them with kindness and bestow on each living one of them the sum of one dollar. Art. 5th In case that either of my two daughters Betsy Ann Dickerson or Adeline Dickerson or both of them should be without issue or that either of my sons McHenry or Smithing H. Dickerson or both of them should die without issue then the surviving one of ones of the four shall inherit the lands divided in Art 3rd of this will. Dickerson In Bedford County Court January 29th 1878 the last will and testament of Bartless Dickerson dec’d bearing date the 4th day of December 1874, was produced in Court, proved according to law by the oaths of Clements Dickerson and Callohill Dickerson two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded as the true will and testament of said Bartlett Dickerson deceased and on the Motion of Callohill H. Dickerson one of the Executors in said will named, who made oath thereto and together with Clemming Dickerson his surety (who justified, entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of Four hundred dollars conditioned according to law, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of said will in due form, and Clemmons Dickerson the other executor in said will named in open Court refused to take upon himself the burden of the execution thereof.
