I, John Christopher Lainhart of the County of Bedford and the Parish of Russell, being weak of body, but sound of mind and memory, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament, and first: My will and desire is that all my just debts be paid. Then my will and desire is, that my well-beloved wife Susanna Elizabeth Lainhart, have the use of the land where I now live, and all my personal estate during her life. Item: I give and bequeth to my son Isaac Lainhart, the land where on I now live, containing two hundred and fifty acres to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my daughter Catherine Lainhart two hundred and forty acres of land being part of the land I hold of my son Adam Lainhart to be laid off for her at the upper end and by running a line paralel with the upper line to her and her heirs forever. Item: I five to my grandson Jacob Cofer two hundred and six acres of land the lower end of the land I had of my son Adam Lainhart on the Otter River and Roaring run, which I give to him and his heirs forever. And at my wife’s death, my desire is that my household goods be equally divided between my son Isaac Lainhart and my daughter Catherine Lainhart Cofer. And lastly I appoint and constitute my son Isaac Lainhart and Josias Cofer executors of this my last will and testament. It appears to be a complicated design incorporating the initials “JCL” ) from Bedford County Deed Book 1, Page 503 In presents of us Thomas Haynes William Calloway John Allen At a court held for Bedford County Virginia 27 September 1779 The last will and testament of John Christopher Lainhart, deceased was proved by the oaths of William Calloway and Thomas Haynes witnesses subscribed and ordered to be recorded and in the motion of Isaac Lainhart, one of the executors therein named, who made oath thereto. Certificate is granted him for obtaining probate in due form, giving security whereupon together, with Charles G Walkin’s, Charles W Glochlin and Jacob Anderson, his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of 2000 pounds for the said executors due and faithful administration of said decedents estate and performance of his will.
