Will of John Walden, c1839 - Bedford Co. VA In the name of God Amen..I John Walden of the County of Bedford calling to mind the uncertainty of death and being weak in body but of sound mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in the following manner that is to say. 1st it is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be first be paid, and the rest of my estate I bequeath as follows. 2nd Item I give unto my beloved wife the use and profit of all my estate both real and personal during her natural life and at her decease to be divided as follows. 3rd I give to my son James during his natural life two negroes Emily a girl and see Sal a boy, one horse and saddle one bed and furniture and fifty dollars cash to bear his expenses to his sister Polly's and at his death my desire is that Polly keep the house, bed & money, and the two negroes return back to my estate and be equal divided amongst all my children to Wit. Polly Goggins, Harriet Hancock, Emelina Sammons, And John H. Cobbs, the two last are my grandchildren the two to have one share, to them and their heirs forever 4th Item I give to my daughter Polly Goggins one negro girl Ann, but if she dies before Polly gets possession of her, my desire is that the value of her shall be made up to her out of my estate one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf and heifer two sheep all except Ann I give her soon after she was married. 5th Item I give to my daughter Harriet one negro girl Eliza one gray mare, one feather bed and furniture one cow and calf & heifer and two sheep, twenty five dollars hire of negro one year to her and her heirs forever, 6th Item I give to John Cobb who married my daughter Jane one gray mare one bed & furniture one cow and heifer and 2 sheep, these things I give them soon after they were Married. 7th I give my two grandchildren Emelinah and John H Cobb one negro girl Carolina to be equally divided between them. The balance of my estate that I have not here given away I wish to be equally divided amongst all my children to Wit. Polly Goggins, Harriet Hancock, and Emmalinah Sammons, and John H. Cobbs my two grandchildren the too to have one third that what would be their mothers share. This last will and testament of John Waldron deceased was produced in Court, proved by the oath of Thomas Johnson a subscribing witness thereto and the hand writing of Samuel Hancock the then subscribing witness thereto by the oath of Robert C.
