Addison BUTT, born about 1782 in Virginia, was my g-g-g grandfather. It is fairly certain that he married Elinor (or Eleanor) Glenn in Botetourt County, VA in 1802. From that time on, the family is well documented. What is not known for certain is who were the family and ancestors of Addison BUTT. An Archibald BUTT, signed Addison BUTT's marriage bond. Although this was probably a relative, there is no proof whether or not it was his father. It could have been a brother or cousin. Know all men by these presents that we Addison Butt & James Glenn are held and firmly bound to his Excellency James Monroe, Esqr. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the time being in the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to which payment well and truly to be in & to the said governor and his successor in office for the use of the , Commonwealth we bind ourselves, our executioners and administrators jointly and severally, ____ by these sealed with our seal and dated 19th day of May, 1802. The condition of the above obligation is such that ___ there is a marriage shortly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound Addison Butt and Elinor Glenn, daughter of the above bound James. Therefore there be no lawful cause ___ to obstruct said marriage then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force. Signed and sealed _____Archibald Butt (with an "X"" his mark") for Addison Butt. James Glenn. An Archibald BUTT, was shown in the Botetourt County 1810 census (page 610) as 45 years and up (00001-0010100), as was a female listed in his household. In the 1820 census, he was not listed on the census (page 050) in Botetourt County. A widow Sarah Butt (Mrs. Archibald BUTT?) was living on Gaion (Garn) Ridge in the county. On the same page was a Michael BUTT. Some BUTT researchers may have been sidetracked by a bill of sale in Berkeley County, VA in 1821 that conveyed a number of items of personal property from an Addison (or Adison) BUTT to James Rooney. It is apparent that the sale was probably following the death of Archibald, noting that the property was " … in a certain tenament lately occupied by Archibald Butt decd., [deceased] in said County and now late in the occupation of said Addison Butt…" Know all men by these presents that I Adison Butt of the County of Berkeley and State of Virginia for and in consideration of the sum of Thirty Three dollars and forty eight and a half cents, to me in hand paid by James Rooney of the County and State aforesaid or before the sealing and Delivery of these presents, the Receipt whereof I the said, Adison Butt do hereby acknowledge have granted Bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant Bargain and sell unto the said James Rooney his executors administrators and afsigns all the goods &- Chattles, household stuff Implements and Furniture particularly mentioned, Exprefsed and Contained in the schedule herein particularly mentioned, That is to say one shovel plough one grey mare, and a set of Gears one Barrel one Tub Two Iron pots two dutch ovens, one Tea Kettle and bake plate Two feather beds Bedding and bedsteads one Comer Cupboard, one Table four Chairs two flat Irons, one Chest, one flax wheel one Check Reel, one looking glafs a pair of stilyards, one auger, one hand saw, one Chisel, one Iron pot Rack, one Barrel, &-two Bread Trays, a shovel and Tongs [ 1 54] about eight acres of wheat in the ground, one pick Axe, one server, Two Tin Cups, a Coffee pot &- pewter plate, Candle moulds one horn and strainer two tin water buckets and six Geese, all and singular which said Premises are now remaining standing or being in a Certain Tenament lately occupied by Archibald Butt decd., in said County and now late m the occupation of the said Addison Butt, to have and to hold all and Singular the said Goods and Chattles, house hold stuff and furniture and other the premifses Bargained and sold mentioned or intended to be, to the said James Rooney his Executors Administrators and afsigns forever and I the said Addison Butt, for myself my heirs executors or adn-dnistrators all the singular the said goods and Household stuff and Furniture unto the said James Rooney, his Executors Administrators and afsigns all and every other person and persons, whatsoever, shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents, of all and singular which said goods Chattles household stuff and furniture, I the said Addison Butt have put the said James Rooney in full pofsefsion by delivering to him the said James Rooney, one grey mare at the sealing and Delivery of these presents in the name of the whole Premises hereby Bargained and sold or mentioned or intended so to be, unto him, the said James Rooney as aforesaid. Adison Butt /LY Sign Sealed and Delivered in the presence of Charles Young At a Court held for Berkeley County on the 13th day of August 1821 This Bill of Sale from Adison Butt to James Rooney, was acknowledged by the said Adison and ordered to be recorded. Teste D Hunter CBC By 1821, however, our Addison Butt had removed to Pulaski County, KY, where he had bought land in 1807 and lived until his death in 1844. Susan Starns: We know that Addison and his family came to Pulaski County in 1807-08 and settled on the Mt. Zion Road just north of what was to become the town of Science Hill. His log cabin was still standing when Clarence was a boy as he remembered seeing it. The log cabin either burned or was torn down and a new house built back on the site. Stones from the original chimney were used in the chimney at the new house. Addison was buried in his yard but the grave is no longer there. Addison Butt 198 acre grant S. of Green River 18,149.granted 2-20-1807 Pulaski Co. Clifty Cr. November 21, 1808, 50 A of land was surveyed for Addison Butt west of Pitman Creek (Pulaski County, KY, Bk 1, Surveys p. 163.) 200 A of land was bought May 24, 1830, from Wesley Hickson for $200 on Pitman Creek (Pulaski County, KY, Bk. 7, p.236 Deeds) The GLENNs Perhaps the GLENNs could provide a clue about the BUTT family in Botetourt. In a letter dated 8/5/1996 from Susan Starns to Howard Eugene Butts, Susan wrote: GLENN “James Glenn and his wife, Sarah Grigg, with their two children came from Ireland to America and settled in VA. After their settlement there the following children were born Polly, William, Thomas and Whitehill. Mr. Glenn and his three sons, William, Thomas and Whitehill moved to Ohio; the rest of the children married and moved to Ky. James, William and Thomas were in the War of 1812, and the former was killed at the Battle of New Orleans. The other two sons were with the armies that operated in Canada and the northern part of the United States. By 1850 most of Addison's children moved west - Thomas to Missouri, Archibald to Illinois, Reuben to Kansas and later to Colorado, Nancy to Illinois The only male left was William, Clarence's grandfather. James Glenn and his wife, Sarah Grigg, with their two children, James and Nellie, came from Ireland to America and settled in Virginia. After their settlement there the following children were born-Polly, William ,Thomas and Whitehill. Me. The other two were with the armies that operated in Canada and the northern part of the United States. After the war, Thomas married Lucinda T. Kendall, of Kentucky and came to Missouri in 1815. He came in a wagon, which contained, in addition to his family and furniture, a set of wheel-wright’s tools, a gun and a dog. Mr. Glenn settled first on Cuivre river, but made about twenty settlements in all before he could find a location to suit him. There were all within the present limits of Montgomery county. He was a great hunter and during the first year of his residence in Missouri killed fifty six deer, one elk and one bear. The names of his children were-Julia A., Emily H., Sarah E., James M., and William I. The above was partially taken from a Montgomery County, MO history provided by Nita Ferguson. One source has it that two children who came with the GLENN's from Ireland were "James and Nellie." While Archibald BUTT was a relatively common name of the time, and a number of Archibald BUTTs have been documented, there were only two known Addison BUTTs. (There was an Addison Butt with a son named Archibald, living in Williamsport, Washington County, MD, across the Potomic from Berkeley County, during the time of this conveyance. Aside from the coincidence of Archibald/ Addison given names, they appear to be different people. Family oral tradition has it that Addison BUTT's father was an Archibald BUTT It is also possible that Archibald was another relative, perhaps a brother. The sale of an Archibald BUTT's estate by Addison BUTT raises at least two important questions. What was Archibald BUTT doing in Berkeley County? Did he move there from Botetourt County, or had he always been in Berkeley County? Or was it Addison BUTT who moved to Botetourt County prior to his marriage to Elinor Glenn? By 1821, it was clear that Addison BUTT was well established in Pulaski County, KY. Did Addison journey back to Berkeley County, Virginia to sell Archibald's estate? The bill of sale states that the "tenement" is " … now late in the occupation of the said Adison Butt … " Is "occupation" to be taken literally, and if so, does that indicate that an Addison Butt was living in Archibald's former home? There are other Butts who moved from Berkeley County to Botetourt County during the same time frame and who share some common experiences with Addison and/or Archibald. The following could be brothers or cousins of Addison BUTT: Other BUTTs with Botetourt County Connections Richard Butt Richard BUTT - Could Richard BUTT (1810 Census, page 605, 21110-2001001) could be another son of Archibald BUTT and a brother of Addison, or was he a cousin? Apparently, about the same time that Addison BUTT married Elinor Glenn, a Richard Butt married a Margaret Black in Botetourt County a year later on April 29,1803, with the same Methodist Minister Rev. John Helms, presiding. Richard BUTT was born November 22, 1775 in Berkeley County, VA (Frederick County, MD), and died January 28, 1837 in Botetourt County, VA. He married Margaret Black April 29, 1803. The 1810 census shows Richard BUTT living in Botetourt Co, Virginia. Living with the family are his wife, two sons (Shannon and Archibald P., born about 1809), two daughters (Sally and Margaret) and two unknown females, ages 10-16 and 26-45. Shannon, who married Mary Jane (Reese) Murphy had seven children, one of whom was named Archibald Butt. On November 26, 1809 Richard bought for $2299 from the heirs of Samuel Baldwin a 418 acre tract on Catawba Creek, a branch of the James River. The 1820 census shows Richard BUTT still living in Botetourt Co, Virginia. On November 16, 1822 Richard BUTT advertised in the Herald of the Valley the sale of "the 418 acre plantation he now lives on ... about 8 miles from Fincastle" because of a "determination to remove to the West" The 1830 census shows Richard BUTT living in Botetourt County, Virginia with wife, son Hiram and daughters. On October 29, he bought 165 acres from Robert Greenwood on the headwaters of Lapsleys Run, a branch of the James River. On January 28, 1837 he died in Botetourt County, Virginia, with son Shannon and neighbor Jacob Rudisell appointed executors. In February of 1837, William Anderson, John Snider and James Ritchey were appointed commissioners to divide his land. On February 23, 1837, his estate sale was held. On August 14, 1837, his heirs brought suit against the executors of his estate. On August 26, 1837, commissioners William Anderson, John Snider and James Ritchey divided his land to distribute it to his heirs. In November of 1839, the court reported the condition of his estate, and in December 1847, the final settlement of his estate was recorded in Botetourt County Court. A letter dated March 11, 1987, from James R. Dixon, Valley View, Joplin, MO, 64804, to the Montgomery County, Maryland, Historical Society states: "One of the older relatives (now dec.) believed that Richard was the son of Rignal Butt Sr. (Rognal and other spellings). The relative stated that the family story was that Rignal Sr. was killed in a fight circa 1785 on a public road. He was supposedly killed by a man with a whip. The fight started because both men's wagons became entangled. Rignal was believed to have lived in Berkley Co. (?) Rignal had a brother Richard who raised the four boys of Rignal. Their names were supposed to be Richard, Rignal Jr., Bazil and John. Rignal Sr. must have been killed about 1785." Steven J. Regnal BUTT was born 1765/1784 according to the 1810 census. He is shown in the 1790 census. He must have married before 1791 when his oldest known child, Abraham, was born. He is shown in the 1800 census. In 1802, his son Regnal? was born in Berkeley Co, Virginia. In 1810 the census shows him living in Botetourt Co, Virginia. He and his wife were between 26 and 45 according to the census. Two of his "children" were between 18 and 26. In 1811 he died in Botetourt Co, Virginia. Children of Rignal BUTT are: Abraham Butt, Polly Butt, Melinda Butt, Regnal Butt and Mary Butt. I (Tom Butt) copied the information from the 1810 Botetourt County census at the National Archives in Washington, DC in August 1999. It shows: BUTT, Rignal, 121102211000 (Free White Males Under 10: 0; 10-16: 2; 16-25: 1; 26-45: 1; 45 and over: 0; Free White Females Under 10: 2; 10-16: 2; 16-26: 1; 26-45: 1; 45 and older: 0; All others: 0; Slaves: 0). However, Steven J. Butts notes some confusion in the following information about Regnal BUTT: 1825 14 Sep Ara Butt married William Rodaheffer in Botetourt Co, Virginia. Adam Fizer, Jr. posted security and stated she was over 21. It was recorded that she was the daughter of Regnal Butt, deceased. 1827 Could she be the Ara who with William Rodefer were living in Washington Co Virginia. Not likely given the different father's names given but the location and husband's names makes it interesting and confusing. See: Virginia and Virginians by Brock pg 753 Biographical sketch of J. Alex Rodefer stated he was the son of William Rodefer of Abindon "formerly of Shenandoah and Botetourt counties, Virginia, who was a contractor and carpenter from 1827 to the opening of the (Civil) war, and was post quartermaster at Abingdon during the war." Stated that his mother was Ara, daughter of John Butt, Esq, of Berkeley Co, Virginia Could he be John, son of Samuel of Montgomery Co, MD? IF so then he could be a brother of the Archibald shown here to be his father. Hi Tom, No, I didn’t have all that info on the Butts - thank you! Rignal Butt was my husband’s ggggrandfather & he is buried less than two miles from where we live. I think he may be the Rignal Butt, Jr. that is in your information. He was from Berkeley County but our family has had his date of birth as 4 April 1790. I might try a rubbing of the tombstone - it’s not in very good condition anymore. I have not done any research on the Butts for quite some time & have only recently started on that family again. (Cheryl Kerschner, email: dale kerschner [ckersch@yahoo.com]) Please help me find Rignal Butt. He was born in Botetourt Co around 1790. Possibly related, or father of Richard and six other children. He immigrated to Indiana and Miami Co. in 1845. His first wife's name was Rebecca Foist. They were married Dec 15, 1818. Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated as I am at a dead end. Thank you so much for your time. Sincerely, Nancy Butt(s) Corl (John Corl [eddie@kconline.com]) (Gene,Lawrence,Walter,Samuel,Rignal) P.S. The 1830 census shows him living in Botetourt County with a wife and six children . In December of 1837, the court in Botetourt County recorded the payment of a small debt from the estate of Richard Butt to Regnal and Michael Butt (his brothers?). On August 8, 1809 he and wife sold the 90 acres to Christian Snider .The 1810 census shows a John Butt (later records show his wife's name was Mary) was living in Washington Co, Virginia age (26-45). They lived near Abingdon like the other Butt families who came later. He was shown in the 1820 census. Judy Bates (judyb@inficad.com) has a GGGrandfather named John Filson who married Jemima Butt in 1799 in Berkeley Co., VA. A man named Archibald Butt was the person who “gave” her bond or however you say that. She and John had two sons, John Thomas and Archibald Filson. Family information is extremely scarce but the only information about her is that she may have been married to a ? Butt before marrying John and Archibald may have been her brother-in-law or her former father-in-law. Her maiden name may have been Benton. On the other hand she may have been a daughter of Archibald, esp. since she and John named one of their children after him. Anyway, something happened to this marriage because John then married my GGGrandmother, Nancy Catlett in about 1810 or 11 and they proceeded to have 8 children winding up in Stark Co., OH. John and Nancy lived in VA. for awhile and John spent some time in Botetourt Co. I know, so these people you talk about - Addison and Archibald Butt, may be connected to Jemima and John. Have you ever heard of Jemima? I have been searching for the answers to when exactly Nancy and John were married and what happened to Jemima but have not found the answers yet. I do know that John Thomas and Archibald stayed with John and Nancy until they were grown and had families of their own. Nancy Catlett was married before she married John. I found her marriage in Washington Co., MD. in 1808 to a William Devenport (Davenport?). I don’t know what happened to William either. Gragg, at his residence in Pulaski County, Ky., in which he was born November 22, 1806, and born of the spirit 1827. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, remaining a firm member until his death. He bore with a Christian patience and fortitude, the loss of his first companion and two infant children, who had no doubt entered the heavenly land before him, and welcomed his arrival. He suffered long in his much afflicted family; and had not been known for some years to doubt, for a moment, his acceptance with God. Having made arrangements respecting his temporal affairs, he patiently awaited the hour of his release from suffering and pain. On one occasion, he said to his friends he was going to die. I asked him if he still felt prepared. He said he did. On recovering a little, he aid he thought he was just going to see his friends in heaven; calling many of heir names; but said he was willing to suffer another week longer if it was the will of the Lord. He had served the Church as class leader in different societies. He was beloved and esteemed. His end was perfect peace. May the God of the fatherless guide, direct, and sustain his little ones, seven in number, who are now doubly afflicted in the loss of their pious mother, whose obituary follows.
