Present: Geo. Skillern, Thomas Rowland, Martin McFarran & Math. Willson, Gent. Justices. Henry Cartmill is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of Wm. Bilbro, who is dischd. from that office, and it is ord. that the sd. Bilbro divide the hands & distances between the said Henry Cartmill and Audley Paul. John Madison is apptd. Surveyor of the Road from the ford of the river at Wm. Madison's place to the widow Kent's, and Hugh Crockett from thence to the County line, & the tithables on the south & north fork of Roanoake above Isaac Taylor's, including thereon Inglishes Creek, to attend sd. surveyors when required to keep sd. roads in repair as the law directs. Thomas Goodson is recommended to his Excellency the Governor as a fit person to execute the office of a Captain of the Militia of this County. Colo. James Robinson is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of Moses Dunlop who is dischd. from that office. David Henderson the same in the room of Moses Allen the same as next above. Christopher Cooper is apptd. Constable in the room of Wm. Seagrave who is dischd. from that office. Thomas Scott is excused from the payment of County levy. Charles Turman the same as next above. Rotus McElheny for a Negro man named Toby the same as above. Ord. that Wm. Terry, Christopher Richards, Thomas Goodson and Daniel Sheloe or any three of them being first sworn are apptd. to view a way from Wm. Terry's on Brush Creek to Thomas Flour's on the West Fork of Little River, & report the conveniences & inconveniences thereof to the next court. The last will & testament of Colo. John Smith, deed., was prestd. in ct. & prvd. by the oath of Geo. Hutcheson, one of the witnesses. Ordered that James Smith, John Cartmill, John Mills and Michael Ocletree or any three of them being first sworn do view & mark out a waggon road from the main road below Purgatory Creek crossing the river at Stevenson's ford, thence down the river, crossing at John Logan's, and thence to the County line, and make report of the same to court. John Sterling is apptd. Constable in the room of James McCarroll who is dischd. from that office. Road established from the County line of Greenbrier to John Deans. Robert Armstrong appointed Surveyor of the same, and John Baller, Gent., to allott the hands with which to keep same in repair. March 14th, 1783. Present: Geo. Skillern, Adam Smyth, James Barnett, Saml. Todd, Saml. Eason & Wm. Neelly, Gent. Justices. John Tatham allowed five pounds for maintaining Lawrence Conner, a Continental wounded soldier, ten months at ten shillings per month. Elizabeth Hartgrove Plff. ) agst. ) In Case Henry Hicks Deft. ) This day came the parties &c & also a jury, towit: Philip Love, Wm. Crow, Bartus Shephard, John Logan, Wm. Bilbro, Wm. Allen, Henry White, Geo. Poage, Adam Peck, Daniel McNeell, Wm. McMurray .and Curtis Alderson, retd. verdt. deft. guilty of breach of assumption declared and fixed plff.'s damages at £2.9.8. Judgt. given for same and costs. Wm. Hamilton, John Lewis, James Moss & John Galloway apptd. to mark a way for a road from the place formerly Banner's on Barber's Creek to the Sweet Springs & to make report to the court. Thomas McGeorge is apptd. Dep. Sheriff in this County. Leonard Huff bound for good behaviour for twelve months and one day from date. Elisha Knox apptd. Surveyor of the Road, succeeding James Robinson, James Robinson & Edward McMullin to allot the tithables to work under said Surveyor and John McCallister as also their bounds. John Knight orphan of Catherine Knight, bound out. Ordered that Caleb Worley's tithables work on that part of the road which Samuel McClure is Surveyor, & that Samuel McClure keep the road in repair from Bowen's Run to the Yellow Gulley, & that Wm. McClure's and Thomas Read's tithables be added to his list. Ordered that Captain Eason take & return list of taxable property within bounds of his own company of militia. Ordered that sum of 10 lbs. 4 shillings be levied at laying of next levy for David Mays for furnishing collectors for recruiting soldiers, with lists of the severall taxes. Also James Breckinridge the sum of 8 lbs. 8 shillings for assisting therein. John Peck recommended to the Governor as proper person to execute office of Ensign of the militia in this County.
