Elisabeth Bright acquitted on charge of murdering her base born child. May 11, 1784. William Campbell allowed 40 shillings for beef furnished Militia of this State. John Reaburn appointed Surveyor of the Road in place of Walter Stewart. George McNeely appointed Constable in the place of Joseph Reaburne. John Henderson appointed Surveyor of the Road from the ford above John Vanlier's to James' Woods. John Neelly appointed First Lieut., James Mason, Second Lieut., and John Craig Ensign in Capt. Neelly's Company of Militia. The Grand Jury appeared in Court and presented the following persons: Samuel McFarran, Surveyor, for not keeping his road in repair; also the Surveyor of the Road from Mrs. Mary McDonald's to the Bedford Line; also the Surveyor of the Road from the Court House to Catawba Creek. James Smith granted license to keep ordinary at the home of Mr. Baine, David May security. Rev. Edward Crawford exempted from future payment of taxes on his negro Jacob, Sr. Jas. McFarran appointed Lieut., David Worley Ensign in Capt. Smith's Company. John R. Buckle bonded with security to bo of good behavior for 12 months and a day. Wm. Walden exempted from the future payment of taxes on his negro Cupid. Mary McNeell choses James Mason as her guardian. May 12, 1784. Title to lots in Town of Fincastle vested in Andrew Henry. Thomas Anderson appointed Surveyor of the Road, succeeding Wm. Cross. Wm. Dempsey granted leave to include his lands where he now lives and adjoining the said tract in one survey. John Glenn, same as next above. Benjamin Kelley, same as next above. Wm. Crow allowed 3 pounds per year for maintaining and clothing William Duncan. Certified that James Montgomery, orphan of Saml. Montgomery, decd., is still living. James Anderson exempted from payment of parish and County levies in future on account of his age and infirmity. Ordered that the Sheriff hire out Hannah Jackson, a Negro woman, in custody for one year to the highest bidder, and advertise her immediately in the "Virginia Gazette" together with her child. May 13, 1784. David Robinson allowed 3 pounds, 2 shillings and 6 pence for beef furnished the Militia. Hannah Jackson declared to be a free woman, having been in the custody of the Sheriff several years as a slave. Joseph Frazer took the oath of Deputy Sheriff of the County. Uriah Humphries exempted from payment of taxes in future for his negro Abraham, account of age and infirmity. James Dunn same. Thomas Bowyer exempted from payment of poll tax for the year 1783, being an officer in the Continental Line. Major Thomas Bowyer's claim against the County ordered paid.
