Samuel Mitchell, William Bilbro, Michael Ocheltree and John Cartmill ordered to view the way proposed by John Kennedy for the Great Road to go past his plantation. Leave granted Peter Evans to include his lands in one survey. William Walton resigned his office as Commissioner of the Peace to live a more retired life. The grand jury presented the following persons: Mariam Robinson for attempting to murder Margaret Hunter. Dismissed. Overseer of tho road from Greenbriar waters to Capt. Baller's mill for not keeping same in repair. Geo. Spites for altering the highway. Overseer of the road from Bullit Spring to Capt. Pryor's ford for not keeping same in repair. Overseer of the Road from Capt. Pryor's Ford to Uriah Humphries' plantation for not keeping same in repair. Same from James Dalzell's to _____. John Coats placed under bond for good behavior for a year and one day. James Smith granted license to keep an ordinary at the house of Alexander Baine above Fort Lewis on Roanoake. Same to William Walton at his own house. William Herbert appointed Constable, succeeding James McMullin. The Militia Officers' Commissions in this County bear dates as follows: Geo. James Barnett, Capt., Feb. 11, 1778. Henry Watterson, Capt. Aug. 12, 1781. David May, Capt. Apl. 12, 1780. John Cartmill, Capt. Apl. 13, 1780. Wm. McNeelly, Lieut., July 15, 1780. John McNeelly, Lieut., Aug. 16, 1785. Robert McNeelly, Capt., Apl. 13, 1784. Hugh Allen, Lieut., Aug. 2, 1785. Uriah Humphries, Lieut., Aug. 2, 1786. Aug. 9, 1786. The date of John Mills' commission as Captain is Aug. 12, 1780. Wm. Campbell allowed for horse killed in service. Andw. Smyth, Admr, of Adam Smyth, given leave to include the lands of the estate of Adam Smyth in one survey. John Mills, Jesse Clark, Joseph Pryor and William Bilbro recommended to the Governor as Inspectors of Tobacco. James Bryant, James Robertson and Thomas Taylor ordered to view the way proposed for turning the way from Fort Lewis to Peter Durley's. Aug. 10, 1786. Samuel McFarran granted leave to include lands in one survey. Simeon Gillispy appointed Surveyor of the Road. Geo. Skillern, Wm. McClenachan, Pat Lockhart, Geo. Rutledge, Thos. Rowland, James Barnett, Joseph Looney, Robt. Henry, Saml. Todd, Mathew Willson, Philip Love, Andw. Lewis, Rowland, Madison, Jas. Robinson (Stone Creek), James Woods, John Kent, Thos. Goodson, Jr., Wm. Goodson, Saml. Mitchell, John Cartmill, John Hawkins, John Dear, Jas. Wright, Sampson Sawyer, Henry Bowyer, Alexr. Lewis, Edward McDonald, James. Mason and Richard Morris recommended to the Governor as Commissioners of the Peace. Aug. 11, 1786. Ordered that the day providing tho monthly court in this County be the day for holding the Rules in the Clerk's Office agreeable to the law for reforming the County Courts. Moses Allen appointed Constable, succeeding John Allen. William Crow fined for contempt of court. William Sutton allowed 6 pounds for a rifle lost in the Continental Army, also 6 pounds for his deficiency in clothing during same. Aug. 12, 1786. James Huth bound for his good behavior for a year and 1 day. Wm. Crawford and John Galloway, securities. Ordered that the Sheriff advertise the letting of the building of a prison to the lowest bidder at the September Court, agreeable to plan of Pat Lockhart, Thomas Rowland and Geo. Hancock. Ordered that a road be established from this town to the Brunswick Iron Works. Thomas Rowland appointed Overseor of the Road, succeeding James McCreary.
