Joseph and William Haynes granted licenses to keep retail stores. James Blair, Gentleman, took the oaths required to practice law in this County. Francis Preston, Gentleman, took the oaths of an attorney. License granted Edmund Goodwin to solemnize the rites of matrimony. The Grand Jury presented the following persons: Jacob Carper and Jacob Harmen for retailing cider from six to seven pence per half quart. Jacob Carper for not having copy of the rates in his house according to law. Uriah Humphries for retailing liquors contrary to law. George Patterson, same as next above. Thomas Rowland for not keeping bridge in repair over Lick Run. Surveyor of the Road from Walter Smiley's to James Allison's place for not keeping same in repair. Uriah Humphrios for not keeping a bridge in repair. Adam Peck for not keeping bridge in repair. Samuel Goodwin entered into bond to solemnize the rites of matrimony, Wm. Campbell and Anthony Gholston securities. May 9, 1787. Rowland Madison appointed Commissioner of the Tax in place of James Kent. Thomas King, Robert McCreary and James Stewart admitted to rights of citizenship. Leave granted Benj. and Joseph Hanes to include lands in one survey. James Simpson granted leave to include three surveys in one. Mary Watkins fined for not attending Court as a witness. William Duers made satisfactory proof that he is the heir at law of John Davis, a soldier of the Seventh Virginia Regiment, who died in captivity at Charles Town. Commonwealth vs. Geo. Spotts, presentment for retailing liquors, dismissed. William Grymes excused from paying fine levied yesterday. May 10, 1787. Gentlemen in the Commission who had not qualified summoned to appear at the August term of Court to qualify, or send resignations in writing. Presentment against Jacob Carper for retailing liquors above the rates was dismissed. William Anderson fined for contempt of court. May 11, 1787. Robert Calvert, Henry Walker, John Smith and Robert Caldwell ordered to view the ways for a wagon road from Town over Craigs Creek Mountain to the plantation of Alexander Smyth. Geo. McClowell, Benjamin Lemarter and Benjamin Lamuster placed under bond for their good behavior.
