Present: John Bowyer, William Fleming, Philip Love, Andrew Woods and Adam Smyth, Gent. Justices. The oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia was administered to John May & the following Magistrates (towit): John Bowyer, William Fleming, Philip Love, Andrew Woods and Adam Smyth, Gent. The order for binding out John Willson, bastard child of Sarah Willson, to George Campbell, by consent of the said Campbell, is set aside, and it is ord. that the church wardens bind out said child to David Logan accdg. to law. The persons apptd. to view the road from near James Arnold's crossing Arnold's Valley by Stephen Lyons' house, thence through the mountain to George Willson's on Sproul's Run & crossing James River at Thomas Strunson's Ford and into the Great Road near William Maxfield's, report that a good bridle way may be made and the same is established, and the persons petitioning are apptd. to open the same and keep it in repair as the law directs. The persons apptd. to view the road from the court house to Wm. Ward's saw mill made a report and it is ord. that a road be established accdg. to said report, & that the petitioners do open & keep the same in repair as the law directs. David May is apptd. Surveyor of the Road from John Stewart's to John Howard's, & it is ord. that Richard May & William Fleming do divide the tithables between the sd. David May & Dawson Wade. John McCorkle is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of Joseph Walker, who is dischd. from that office. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till tomorrow morning, 8 o'clock. Present: John Bowyer, William Fleming, Benjamin Estill, Philip Love & Adam Smyth, Gent. Justices. Pursuant to an Act of General Assembly directing the courts to appoint some of their members to tender and administer the oath of allegiance to the free male inhabitants of their respective counties, Wm. Madison is appointed in the bounds of Captain Rentfroe's and Willson's Companies of Militia on Little River. Philip Love in the bounds of Captain Crockett's Robinson's Companies on Roan Oak and McMurtrey's on Sinking Creek. William Fleming in the bounds of Captain McClenachan's and Pauling's Companies. William McClenahan in the bounds of Captain Armstrong's & Henry Smith's Companies of Militia. Andrew Woods in the bounds of Captain Rowland's, McFarran's & Lockhart's Companies of Militia. Adam Smyth in the bounds of Captain Cook's Andrew Hamilton's & John Anderson's Companies of Militia. Andrew Donally in the bounds of his own Capt. Brown's, Captain Stewart's & Wm; Hamilton's Companies of Militia. James Henderson in the bounds of his own Capt. John Henderson's, Capt. Gillispie's and Capt. Vanbbber's Companies. Richard May in the bounds of Capt. Dean's and the Company lately John Robinson's. George Skillern in the bounds of Capt. Givens', Capt. Hanley's & Capt. Gilmore's Companies of Militia. Benjamin Estill in the bounds of John Paxton's & James Hall's Companies of Militia. John Bowyer in the bounds of Capt. Samuel Wallace's & Wm. Paxton's Companies of Militia. Benjamin Estill produced a commission from his Excellency the Governor apptg. Sheriff of this County, but refused to take himself the execution thereof. Ord. that Adam Smyth and Patrick Lockhart at such time as they shall appoint do let to the lowest bidder the building of a prison, to be twenty by sixteen feet of square loggs at least fourteen inches square, floured both above and below of loggs of the same dimentions, and the roof to be of lapt joint shingles, and the whole to be built on the strongest and best plan the said trustees can agree upon.
