Present: George Skillern, Benjamin Estill, Adam Smyth & Wm. Madison, Gent. Justices. For examination of Timothy Keith on suspicion of his feloniously counterfiting the paper currency of this Commonwealth, the prisoner was set at bar and arraigned of the felony aforesaid and pleaded thereto not guilty. Whereupon sundry witnesses were sworn & examd. on behalf of the Commonwealth and the prisoner heard on his defence. On consideration whereof the court are of opinion that he is not guilty & that he ought to be dischd. & set at liberty. This proceeding was signed by George Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 10th day of March, 1778. Present: George Skillern, Benjamin Estill, Wm. Madison & Adam Smyth, Gent. Justices. On report of the viewers apptd. by last (word omitted) to view the road from Mr. Benjamin Hawkins' ford on Cataba to Capt. Israel Christian's mill, the court are of opinion that the road ought to come on the east side of Archibald Kyle's and Adam Pek's lots and cross on the south side of said Peck's lot and on part of Capt. Israel Christian's, and thence into the old road, & it is so established as to view and lay off the same. Ord. that Mary Ryon, a servant woman belonging to Wm. McClenachan, do serve her Master one year over and above the time of her indenture & time formely laid on her for having a bastard child. Ordered that Patrick Lockhart, John Potts and James Rowland do view the way from Benja. Haukins' ford on Cataba to the Cantherin crossing the lands of Israel Christian, Adam Peck and Archibald Kyle to the west. Hugh Crockett took the oath proscribed by law as Major of the Militia in this County. Ord. that this court be adjd. till tomorrow morning, 6 o'clock. The minutes of these prodgs. were signed by George Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 11th day of March, 1778. Present: William Fleming, Geo. Skillern, Wm. McClanachan, William Madison & Adam Smyth, Gent. Justices. Mary McClure came into court and reqlinquishes all legacies and bequests in her husband's will contained. Whereupon George Givens, Andrew Woods & Thomas McFarran are apptd. to lay to the widow and assign her her the the ds of her said husband's real estate. Malcom McClure and Hanah McClure came into court and with the consent of the (word omitted) choose Malcom Allen their guardian. Whereupon the said Malcom together with Thomas Madison his security entered into bond in the sum of one hundred pounds and conditioned as the law directs. Ord. that John Stewart be recommended to his Excellency the Governor as a fit person to execute the office of County Lieutenant, Saml. Lewis Colo., James Henderson Lieut. Colo., and Andrew Donally Major for the County of Greenbrier. Ordered that Mr. Thomas Madison be apptd. to collect the money due on the several bonds for lotts sold in the town, and if the parties fail to pay the same to commence suits against them. George Skillern and Wm. McClanchan are hereby authorized to dispose of the lotts that remain unsold at the next court. Andrew Woods with George Skillern and Wm. McClanahan his securities acknd. bonds in the sum of one thousand pounds for the said Woods' true and faithfully executing the office of Sheriff for this County, also two other bonds, one for £500 for the said Woods' faithful collection of all fines & the other for £1000 for his faithful collection of the publick levy. John Reaburn is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of James Barnett, who is dischd. from that office. Samuel McClure is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of Caleb Worley on the north side of James River, who is dischd. from that office. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till court in course.
