Skillern, Benjamin Estill, Philip Love, Andrew Woods, William Madison, Wm. McClanachan, Adam Smyth, Wm. Christian, Patrick Lockhart, Thomas Lewis, George Rutledge, Jonathan Taylor, Wm. Hamleton, Thomas Rowland, John Armstrong, Robert Poage & James Barnett, Gentlemen, were presented (word omitted) Court. Whereupon George Skillern and William Madison administered the oath of Justice to William Fleming, who administered the same to the other Justices. They then proceeded to the choise of a Clerk, when Laird May was unanimously chosen, who took the oath according to law. At a court held for Botetourt County the aforesaid day. Present: William Fleming, Win. Madison, Wm. McClenahan, Adam Smyth, Patrick Lockhart, Thomas Rowland, John Armstrong & James Barnett, Gent. Justices. John Harrison is apptd. a Constable in the room of Francis McElheney, who is dischd. from that office. Andrew Lewis, who was elected a Commissioner in this County, having signified to the court by a letter that it was not in his power to act any farther in that business, the court then proceeded to elect another agreeable to the Act of Assembly, whereupon Thos. Lewis was apptd. to that office. George Skillern took the oath prescribed by law as Colo. of the Militia in this County. Ord. that Wm. McClenachan, Adam Smyth & Patrick Lockhart do view the state and condition of the Clerk's Office and make report thereof to the court. Ord. that the court be adjd. till tomorrow morning, 8 o'clock. The mins. of these procdgs. were signed by William Fleming At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 15th of April, 1778. Present: George Skillern, William McClenachan, Adam Smyth, Patrick Lockhart, James Barnett & Thomas Rowland, Gent. Justices. David May who yesterday was apptd. Clerk of tho Court, of this County resigned his office on account of his having been illegally chosen, John May, the Clerk of the said court, not having resigned his said office before the said appointment was made. John May, Clerk of this County, resigns his office, and thereupon the court doth unanimously appoint David May to the said office, in the room of John May, whereupon the said David took the oath of office according to law. On the petition of Jesse Clarke leave is granted him to keep an ordinary at the house of Mr. Thomas Boywer in this County for the space of one year from this time, and thereupon he entered into bond according to law. The same to Archibald Kyle at his house in this County, he having entd. into bond accdg. to law. Wm. Meelley took the oath required by law as an Ensign in the Militia of this County. John Blaggen, an orphan child, comes into court, and with the consent of the court agrees to serve Thomas Hutcheson as an apprentice during the term of his indenture whereby he was bound to serve Wm. Hutcheson, decd., upon the sd. Thomas Hutchcson's paying him at the end of the said term ten pounds, instead of the usual dues. And it is ord. that the said indenture be transmitted to record. This court doth authorize Joseph Carrol to purchase a cow and grain to the amount of fifteen pounds for the support of Mary Allsop and her two children, the wife of Thomas Allsop, who is engaged in the Continental service. Ord. that the sum of ten pounds eleven shillings and six pence be repaid to Patrick Lockhart which he hath advanced in behalf of the publick for the support of Mary Smith and her three children, whose husband James Smith is a soldier in the Continental service, also the further sum of nine pounds ten shillings which he hath advanced for the support of Margaret Laird and her children whose husband David Laid is a soldier in the said service, and the farther sum of fifteen pounds for Mary Smith & five pounds for Mrs. Laird, to be received & applyed by him in tho purchase of a cow, & such other necessaries that they may stand in need of. Ord. that the ct. be ajd.
