Present: Pat Lockhart, James Barnett, Wm. Walton, and Thomas Rowland, Gent. Justices. On the motion of Wm. Crow, leave is granted him to build a grist mill on Purgatory Creek on the land purchased of James Carbet, it appearing to the court that no person will be injured thereby. Ord. that John Reaburn's claim be certified who proved to the court that he served as a soldier in Capt. Hog's Company of Rangers in the year 1759 for the protection & defence of this Colony. Ord. that Jacob Parsingcr's claim be certified who proved to this court that he and two of his sons, Abraham and Philip, served as soldiers under Capt. Dickerson in the year 1757 for the defence of this Colony and that his are since dead & under age both. Robert Gillispie, Senr.'s claim as a Sergeant in Captain Dickerson's Company in 1764 for the defence of this Colony is ordered to be certified. John McMullin's claim as a soldier in Capt. Dickerson's Company in the year 1758 & 1759 is ordered to be certified. Patrick Carragun and Joseph Swoop, joint heirs at law of Joseph Swoop, Senr., decd., who served as a soldier in Capt. Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1758 is ordered to be certified. Ordered that Thomas Keller's claim as a Corporal in Capt. Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1757, 1758 & 1759 be certified. Ezekiel Thompson's claim as a soldier who served who in Capt. Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1757, 58 & 59 is ordered to be certified. Solomon Carpenter's claim do. 1757 & 1758 & is ord. to be certified, and that John Carpenter, Thomas Carpenter's son, is the heir at law. Thomas Carpenter's claim, who served in Wm. Preston's Company of Rangers in the year 1759 as a soldier is ord. to be certd. Ord. that Edward McMullin's claim who served as a soldier in the year 1768 & 1759 in Capt. Dickerson's Company of Rangers be certfd. John Edward's claim who served in the old Virginia Regement in Captain (word missing) Company as a soldier is ord. to be certfd. Samuel Conner and John Tygert's claim who served in the old Virginia Regement each as a soldier is ord. to be certd. Ord. that Thomas Read be summoned to the next court to answer a complaint against him by his servant Mary Hunley for unlawfully detaining her in his service. Thomas Casaty's claim who served as a soldier in the old Virginia Regement commanded by Colo. Washington is ordered to be certified and that Robt. Casaty, Junr. is heir at law. William Simpkins' claim do. and that Solomon Simpson is heir at law. William Gill's do. till he died, commanded by Colo. Washington, is ordered to be certified, and that Edward Gill is heir at law. Israel Christian's claim who served as a Captain of a Company of Rangers in the year 1756 is ordered to be certified. Thomas Carpenter's, Junr.'s claim who served as a soldier in Captain Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1757 & 58 is ordered to be certified and that John Carpenter is heir at law. Ordered that Sarah Bond serve John Griffith, her Master, one year over & above the term of her present indenture for having a base born child. Ordered that Mary Compton, wife of Abraham Compton, a soldier in the Continental Army, be allowed for the present support of herself & three small children one hundred pounds & that she draw on the Treasurer for the same. William Mann's claim, who proved that he served in Colo. Peachey's Battalion in the year 1759 for the protection & defence of this Colony as a Sergeant, and Moses Mann is the eldest son & heir at law. Thomas Mann's claim who served in Captain Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1756 as a soldier is ordered to be certified and that Moses Mann, son of John Mann, decd., is heir at law. John Mann's claim who served in Captain Cunningham's Company on the expedition in the year 1764 commanded by Colo. Buckeet as an Ensign is ordered to be certified and Moses Mann his eldest son and heir at law. Ord. that Margaret Compton, relict of John Compton, deed., deliver up to Curtis Alderson and Wm. Crow, her securities, for administration all the estate of the said (missing word) and to endemnify she they having been duly summoned to give them counter security and failed to give the same, but came into court and agrees to deliver up the estate to them. William Ward's claim who served as a (exact copy of the original record) in the Cherokee Expedition commanded by Colo. Byrd in the year 1760 in Capt. Breckinridge's Company, and is ordered to be certified. (See Apl. Court proved Act.) Henry Pauling and John Drapper's claims who proved to this court that they served as soldiers in 1760 under William Byrd, Esqr., which is ordered to be certified. James Barnett's claim as a Sergeant in Capt. Christian's Company of Regulars in the year 1760 commanded by Colo. Byrd is ordered to be certified. Peter Wright's claim as a soldier in Captain Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1759 is ordered to be certified. Joseph Carpenter's, Senr.'s claim as a soldier in the aforesaid Company and at the same time is ordered to be certified, & that John Carpenter, son of Thomas Carpenter, Junr., decd., is the heir at law. David Galloway's, Senr.'s claim who served in Captain Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1757 as a Sergeant is ordered to be certified. William Galloway's claim who served in Captain Dicker-son's Company of Rangers as a soldier in the year 1758 is ordered to be certified. David Galloway's, Junr.'s claim who served in Captain Dickerson's Company in the year 1758 as a soldier is ord. to be certd. Ord. that the court be adjourned till tomorrow morning, six o'clock. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by William McClenachan At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 11th day of February, 1780. Present: William McClenachan, Pat Lockhart, James Barnett, Wm. Walton & Martin McFarran, Gent. Justices. Israel Christian made due proof to this court that he served ac a Commissary in Byrd's Company, upon which the court were of opinion that he is entitled to the same quantity of land that should be granted for the like service. John Baller proved to this court that he servied as a Sergeant in Captain Dickerson's Company of Rangers on the frontiers of this Commonwealth in the year 1756 & 1757 and there is no warrant or other certificate for the same hath been obtained. It is ordered to be certified. John Keene proved that he served in Captain Dickerson's Company of Rangers as a soldier in the year 1756 & 57 on the frontier of this Colony, and it is ordered to be certified, and Wm. Keene is heir at law. Wm. Madison with Wm. McClonachan & Patrick Lockhart, James Barnett and Thomas Madison, his securities, entered into an acknowledged bond to the Governor in the sum of four thousand pounds for the collection of the additional taxes laid on the inhabitants of this County for the use of the United States. Anne Jones, a base born child of Elizabeth Jones, to be bound to Patrick Lockart, her Master, accdg. to law. The court not having been informed of the Act of Assembly authorizing and directing them to appoint Commissioners for the purpose of carrying into execution the Act of Assembly for raising a quantity of grain for the support of the prisoners and necessary war with Great Britain, the consequence of which we have hitherto totally neglected to do it agreeable to the time appointed by the said Act have this day proceeded to appoint Commissioners for that purpose, whereupon Thomas Madison & William Neelly were appointed for that purpose. Wm. McClenachan and James Barnett took the oath of Deputy Sheriffs in this County under Wm. Madison, High Sheriff of said County, according to law. Wm. Madison is appointed Surveyor of the Road from the last ford of the South Fork of Roan Oak to the County line. John Reaburn is apptd. Constable in the room of Moses Dunlop who is dischd. from that office. Peter Dierly is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of John Reaburn who is dischd. Allen Guilliford is apptd. Constable in the room of Michael Cloyd who is discd. from that office. George Clency's claim as a Corporal in Captain Stewart's Company in the old Virginia Regement commanded by Colo. Byrd is ord. to be certfd. William Leatherdale's, Junr.'s claim as a soldier in Captain Balteb's Company in the Old Virginia Regement, commanded by Colo. Byrd, is ordered to be certified. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till court in course.
