Present: Geo. Skillern, Pat Lockhart, Adm. Woods, Robert Poage, Wm. Neelly, & Josiah Martin, Gent. Justices. James Mason and Thomas Edger took the oath of Deputy Sheriffs for this County. Jonathan Tosh is apptd. Constable in the room of Thomas Ferguson who is dischd. from that office. William Seagrave is apptd. Constable in the room of George Snuffer on the head of Little River who is dischd. from that office. Wm. McClenachan on behalf of Wm. Madison, High Sheriff of this County, enters his protest against the sufficiency of the prison of this County. William Inglish is exempted from paying levies for the future on acct. of his age & infirmity. Wm. Watson the samo on acct. of his bodily infirmity. Peter Wiley's & John Wiley's claims are ord. to be certd. who prvd. that they served in Capt. Dickerson's Company of Rangers in the year 1759 as soldiers & that they or either of them (missing letter) ever obtained lands for such services under the King of Great Britain's Proclamation of 1763 (see Apl. Court). Wm. Dimpsey's claim is ord. to be certfd. as above who prvd. he served in Captain Smith's Company of Regulars last war as a soldier untill the same was disbanded. William Holley and James Cooper's claims are ordered to be certified who proved they served in Captain Gist's Company of Light Infantry last war as soldier &c. William Hutcheson's claim is ord. to be certfd. who prvd. he served in Captain Preston's Company of Rangers in the year 1767 as a soldier and that he never obtained any land in consideration thereof (see Apl. Court). Henry Watterson and John Reaburne have leave of this court to have their lands included in one survey where they respectively live, it appearing to the court that they have complyed with the law in this case Robert Hutcheson proved to this court that he served in a Regular Company in a Pennsylvania Regment last war as a Sergeant at the Reduction of Fort Pitt and at the time the Act of Assembly passed granting lands to the officers and soldiers of this Commonwealth for their military services before the year 1763. He was and now is an inhabitant of this Commonwealth. John Bumbry's claim who proved to the court that he served as a soldier in Capt. Christian's Company of Regulars last war and that he never obtained any land in consideration thereof. It is ord. to be certfd. This court doth recommend John Robinson as Captain, John Galloway Lieut, and Thomas Carper for Ensign to a Company of Militia in this County. Also Joseph Pryor Capt., John Crawford Lieut, and Hugh Allen Ensign to Militia Company in this County. John Pryor's claim who proved ho served as a soldier in Capt. Preston's Company in the year 1756, 1757 & 1758 on the frontiers of this Colony and is ordered to be certified. John Allen is appointed Constable in the room of Thomas Read, who is dischd. from that office. Abraham Morris' claim is ord. to be certd. who proved that he served as a soldier in Captain Bailer's Company of Regulars last war and that he never obtained any land in consideration thereof &c. Uriah Humphries proved to this court that he served in Capt. Posey's Company of Regulars last war as a soldier and continued in the same till it was disbanded and that he never obtained any land for said service which is ord. to be certfd. Augustine Broomley's claim as a soldier in Capt. Blugg's Regular Company last war is ord. to be certfd. as above. Edward Young's claim is ord. to be certfd. as a above who proved he served in Capt. Posey's Company of Regulars last war as a soldier. Thomas Mullins' claim is allowed to be certified who proved that he served as a soldier in Capt. Christian's Ranging Company on the frontiers of this Colony in the year 1756, and that he obtained no land in consideration thereof &c. Alexander McArnold's claim as a soldier in Captain Christian's Ranging Company in the year 1756 is ordered to be certified as above (see April court). Joseph Pryor, a Capt, in the Militia, took oath required by law. Peter Branner's claim as a soldier in Capt. Stewart's Company of Regulars last war, and that he hath no land in consideration thereof and is ordered to be certified according to law. Peter Looney, heir at law of Peter Looney, decd., proved that the said decedant served in Capt. Smyth's Company of Rangers in the year 1755 & 1756 on the frontiers of this Colony as a Sergeant, which is ordered to be certified. Hugh MoNeell's claim as a Drummer; Pelius Webb and John Haynes as soldiers in Captain Throgmorton's Company of Regulars last war is ordered to be certified according to law. John Smith, heir at Jaw of Joseph Smith, and proved to this court that the said Joseph Smith served in his Company of Rangers in the years 1755 & 1756 as a soldier, but he was taken prisoner and died the twenty fourth of June, 1756, which is ordered to be certified according to law. James Doren's claim as a soldier in Captain Woodward's Company last war and James Millings as a soldier in Captain Posey's Regular Company last war is ordered to be certified according to law. Abraham Ellis' claim as a soldier in Captain Stewart's Company of Regulars last war is ordered to be certified. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till tomorrow morning, six o'clock. The mins. of these predgs. were signed by George Skillern At a court continued and held for Botetourt County the 10th day of March, 1780. Present: Geo. Skillern, Robert Poage, Wm. Neelly, Minter McFarran, Josiah Martin and Patrick Lockhart, Gent. Justices. Peter Larkin is exempted from paying levies for the future acct, of his age & infirmity. Charles Ellison's claim who proved to the court that he served in the 1st and 2nd Virginia Regment last war as a Corporal in Captain Root's Company, which is ordered to be certified. Wm. Duncan ditto is ordered to be certified who proved to this court that he served in Capt. Lewis' Company bf Regulars last war as a soldier. Upon the complaint of Mary Hanley against Thomas Read his Master for detaining her in his service, the parties were fully heard, upon which the court are of opinion that the said Mary's indentures are illegal & that she be set at liborty. John Harrison and Robert Montgomery are exempted from paying levies for the future on acct. of their ages & infirmities. Ord. that Peter Lanthren, an orphan of Mordica Lanthren, be taken from Peter Kellv and be bound out according to law, and also that Anne Lanthren, orphan of the said Mordica, be bound out accdg. to law. On the petition of John Neelly, Junr., leave is granted him to keep an ordinary at his house in this County for the space of one year from this time on his giving security, on which he together with Wm. McClenachan, his security, entd. into & acknd. bond in the sum of fifty pounds accdg. to law. John Tatham's claim who served as a Sergeant in the old Virginia Regement last war commanded by Colo. William Byrd in Captain Stewart's Company is ordered to be certified. Robert Poage, heir at law of William Poage, decd., prvd. to this court that the sd. William served in Captain Hogg's Company of Rangers on the frontiers of this Colony in the year 1758 as a Sergeant, and to be certified. Ord, that the sum of thirty five pounds be allowed to Andrew Henry for his trouble of keeping a child of Alexr. Chambers', a soldier, and boarding his wife eight weeks and five days, & that he draw on the Treasurer for the same. Philip Watkins prvd. to this ct. that he served in Capt. Montgomery's Volunteer Company on the Sandy Creek expedition against the Shawnees in the year 1756 as a soldier & that he never before proved such service nor obtained any land in consideration thereof under the King of Great Britain's Proclamation of 1763, which is ordered to be certfd. accdg. to law. Marcus Likins is apptd. in the room of Wm. Terry to view a road from the Pine Spur to the County line. John Morris prvd. to the court that he served (missing words) last war as a soldier in the First Virginia Regement which is ord. to be certfd. accdg. to law. The Revd. Adam Smyth comes into court and swears on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God that he imported himself and his son Alexander into this Commonwealth from Ireland at his own expence in order to entitle himself and his son to a bounty of fifty acres of land each, which is ordered to be certified, and that he never before proved such claim. Ordered that the following rates be observed by the ordinary keepers in this County for the present month, towit; L S D To rum per gallon by retail 60 0 6 " whiskey per gallon 25 0 0 " diets 3 12 0 " grain per gallon 3 0 0 " stablage with hay or fodder, one night for one horse 2 6 0 " beer per gallon 4 15 0 Thomas Madison is allowed two hundred pounds as State's Attorney for this County for the present year.
