Present: Pat Lockhart, William Ward, John Armstrong & Wm. Walton, Gent. Justices. A licence is granted to Tobier Craig to keep an ordinary in this County at the Big Lick [1] for the space of twelve months from this time, he having entered into bond with James Neelly and Stephen Thery, his securities, accdg. to law. The Grand Jury appeared in ct. and was sworn (towit): Malcom Allen, Wm. George, Isaac Kelley, Wm. Hutcheson, Wm. Stewart, Wm. Kyle, Isaiah Vinsandt, James Delzell, Josiah Phipps, Wm. Emmens, John McRoberts, Joseph Carroll, Joseph Ward, Wm. Crow, Joseph Reaburne and James Hutcheson, who having received their charge went out of court to consult of their verdict. The Commonwealth against John Martin and Wm. Bucknell for committing tort on the publick property and detaining the waggon in publick services, parties heard & witnesses sworn and examined. Court's opinion that they be fined fifty pounds each, and find two securities, to be bound themselves in one thousand pounds and their securities in five hundred pounds each that they shall be of good behaviour during the time of twelve months. Therefore they are remanded to goal. The Grand Jury appeared in court and presented the Overseers of the Road from the courthouse to Doctor Neelly's. Also the Surveyor of the Road from the creek beyond Mrs. Breckinridge's to the County line between this & Bedford County. Also the Surveyor of the Road from this courthouse to Hall's Run. Also the Surveyor from this courthouse to Major Rowland's, and the Surveyor of the Road from Crow's ferry up James River to John Stewart's for not keeping the same in repair. Also Wm. Anderson, Archibald Woods, John Johnson, Francis Guthery, Wm. Wills, John Wills and Elener French for retailing liquors unlawfully. Also Andrew Henry for selling liquors above the rates of the court. Also the Surveyor of the road from the Beaver Dams to Michael Cloyd's. Ord. that summons issue against the several persons this day presented by the Grand Jury returnable here at the next court. Ord. that this ct. be adjd. till tomorrow morning, eight o'olock. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by Pat Lockhart [1] Now Roanoke City. At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 10th of November, 1780. Present: Pat Lockhart, Thomas Rowland, William Walton &c Josiah Martin, Gent. Justices. A licence is granted to Uriah Humphries to keep an ordinary at his house in this County for twelve months from this time, he having entered into bond with Joseph Kyle, his security, in the sum of fifty pounds accdg. to law. Andrew Lukins, Margaret Lukins, David Lukins, Jonas Lukins and Philip Lukins, infant orphans of Andrew Lukins, decd., to be bound out by the Overseers of the Poor accdg. to law. Ord. that it be certified to the General Assembly that the Acts of the last May session never came to hand till last October court, by which means the Sheriff of this County was deprived from advertizing the election of Overseers of the Poor before the time limited in the said Act expired and they pray the Assembly to order further time for that purpose. Ord. that the court be adjd. till Monday morning, eight o'clock. The mins. of these predgs. were signed by Pat Lockhart At a court contd. and held for Botetourt County the 13th day of November, 1780. Present: Andrew Woods, Geo. Skillern, Pat Lockhart & Thomas Rowland, Gent. Justices. Ordered that express be sent immediately to Wm. Madison, Sheriff of this County, ordering him to attend on Saturday next to give bond and security for the collection of some part of the additional taxes levied on the inhabitants of this County for the present year. A licence is granted to John Neelly near Mrs. Breckinridge's, to keep an ordinary at his house in this County, he having entd. into bond with David May, his security, in the sum of fifty pounds accdg. to law. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till Saturday next, ten o'clock. The mins. of these predgs. were signed by Geo. Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 18th day of November, 1790. Present: Andrew Woods, Patrick Lockhart, Thomas Rowland, & John Armstrong, Gent. Justices. Wm. Madison with David May, Nicholas Carper and James Mason, his securities, entd. into & acknd. bond in the sum of one hundred thousand pounds for the said Madison's faithfull collection of the Taxes imposed by an Act of Assembly at last May session on tho inhabitants of this County. Ord. that this ct. be adjd. till the court in course.
