Present: Geo. Skillern, Adam Smyth, Wm. Ward, Thomas Rowland & Patrick Lockhart, Gent. Justices. Geo. Skillern took the oath required by law as County Lieutenant in this County. Bluny Mills is exempted from paying County levies on account of his age & infirmity. The Commonwealth against Augustine Broomley for treason a jury sworn to try according to evidence towit: Wm. Emmens, Saml. McRoberts, Junr., Samuel McClure, Robert Harris, Andrew Clark, Caleb Worley, James Rowland, Joseph Kyle, Curtis Alderson, John McCracken, Peter Mergan and Richard Armstrong returned a verdict in these words: And we the jury find for the Commonwealth four hundred pounds of tobacco and costs. And judgment against the defendant for the same & costs. Ordered that Augustine Broomley find two securities to be bound severally in the sum of five thousand pounds and his securities in the sum of two thousand five hundred eaoh for the said Broomley's good behaviour for & during the term of twelve months and one day. Benjamin Peck is pptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of Andrew Henry and Thomas Rowland to allot the tithables to work under him. Ord. that the court be adjd. till tomorrow morning, eight o'clock. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by Geo. Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 12th of January, 1781. Present: Geo. Skillern, Pat Lockhart, Wm. Ward, Thomas Rowland and Wm. Neelly, Gent. Justices. Augustine Broomley, James Cloyd & Joseph Richardson came into court and severally acknd. themselves to be indebted to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the said Augustine in the sum of five thousand pounds and the said James & Joseph his securities in the sum of two thousand four hundred pounds each for their respective goods &c. But upon the condition that if the said Augustine Broomley shall be of good behaviour to all the good citizens of this Commonwealth for & during the term & time of twelve months and one day from the date hereof, and also during the meantime shall not do or cause to be done anything injurious to the cause of liberty, either by acting or speaking or any other way, then this recognizance to be void. Thomas Rowland took the oath of a Major of the Militia of this County. Rates to be observed by the ordinary keepers in this County, to wit: L S D West Indian rum per half pint 6 0 0 Brandy do 3 0 0 Whiskey do 2 8 0 Cyder & beer per quart 2 8 0 Grain per gallon 3 0 0 Lodging per night 2 8 0 Fodder or hay for a horse one night & stablage 3 0 0 Diet 7 10 0 Ordered that Wm. Neelly and Thomas Lewis be allowed at the rate of seven hundred and twenty pounds per year for the services as Commissioners of the Grain Tax for this County. John McRoberts is apptd. Second Lieutenant in Captain Lockhart's Company and Adam Peck Ensign. Ord. that the court be adjd. till Tuesday next. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by George Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 16th day of January, 1781 for laying the County levy. Present: the Revd. Adam Smyth, Pat Lockhart, John Armstrong & Thomas Rowland, Gent. Justices. A licence is granted to William Anderson to keep an ordinary at his ferry in this county, bond entd. into with John Cartmill his secty. accdg. to law. Ord. that the Sheriff of this County collect from every tithable person in this County thirty six pounds of tobacco at six shillings per pound. Ord. that, the ct. be adjd. till ct. in course.
