Snowden on suspicion of murder. Prisoner pleaded not guilty; witns. sworn & heard and deft. heard in his defence. Prisoner found guilty and that he ought to be tried for the offence in the General Court, and is remanded to goul. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. The mins. of this prcdg. were signed by Adam Smyth At a court held for Botetourt County the 10th day of May, 1781. Present: Geo. Skillern, Adam Smyth, Wm. Ward, John Armstrong, Martin McFarran & Wm. Davidson, Gent. Justices. A licence is grtd. to John Griger to keep an ordinary at Wm. Crow's ferry in this county, bond entd. into with Wm. Crow his secty. in the sum of fifty lbs. as the law directs. Wm. Bilbro, Dubertus Shepherd, Wm. Campbell and John Kenney are added to the tithables to keep the road in repair from James Mitchell's to the Great Road by Purgatory Creek. The Grand Jury appd. in ct. and were sworn, towit: Moses Tulley, James Neelley, Junr., Joseph Leatherdale, John Preston, Joseph Robinson, Samuel Burk, Moses Preston, Wm. Stewart, Wm. Greenlee, John Kenny, Wm. Kyle, James Dalzel, Wm. Webb, John Pryor & John McRoberts, who having recd, their charge went out of court to consult of their verdict. Hugh Allen (Rigment) Second Lieut, in Captain Pryor's Company and Uriah Humphries Ensign. Ord. that 100 pounds be allowed John Bowyer for keeping an orphan child ten months. Ord. that the sum of 600 lbs, be allowed to John Beard for keeping John Wormsley one year from the present date and the Sheriff is ord. to pay 300 lbs. in advance out of the depositum. Ord. that the sum of 300 lbs. be pd. by the Sheriff to Mr. Waide who is to apply the same towards the support of a poor woman now living at James Ewing's, Joseph Damrel is apptd. Constable in Capt. Pryor's Company of Militia and Wm. Wright in Capt. Galloway's. Ordered that the sum of five hundred pounds be paid out of the depositum by the Sheriff to William Crow for the present support & keeping of William Duncan for which he is to account. The Grand Jury retd. into ct. and prestd. the following persons to wit: We of the Grand Jury present Spencer Humphreys for living in adultery with (blank space). We also present the Surveyor of the Road from Thos. Miller's to Nails Run for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the Road from Mrs. Mary McDonald's to Mr. Andrew Woods' for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the Road from the Town to the top of Cregg's Creek Mountain for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Ordered that the Clerk signify to the Delegates that this court is serious of having the court day in this County altered from the second Thursday in each month to the second Tuesday, and that they apply to the General Assembly for this purpose. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till tomorrow morning, ten o'clock. The mins. of these predgs: were signed by Geo. Skillern At a court continued and held for Botetourt County the eleventh day of May, 1871. Present: George Skillern, Revd. Adam Smyth, William Ward, Martin McFarran and William Davidson, Gent. Justices. Whereas it is represented to the court that James Mason has got an inclusive survey of certain lands in said County containing three old surveys to the amount of two hundred and forty four acres and an entry of three hundred & six acres, ordered that the Clerk certify that the court are of opinion the said resurvey is just & reasonable. It appearing to this court that Wm. Mason has got an inclusive survey made of lands in this County containing two hundred & fifty acres an old survey and one hundred & sixty of an entry to the amount of four hundred and ten acres, ordered that it be certfd. that the court are of opinion that the sd. resurvey is just & reasonable. George Frazer is apptd. Second Lieut. in Captain Hanley's Company of Militia. Uriah Humphries is apptd. a Deputy Sheriff in this County who took the oath reqd. by law.
