Present: Adam Smyth, Wm. Neelly, Robert Poage & Saml. Eason, Gent. Justices. On the petition of sundry inhabitants on both sides of James River ordered that the road formerly ordered to be cleared from the Upper end of Caleb Worley's plantation into the waggon road by Hugh Allen's be by the former overseer cleared and kept in repair accdg. to law and that the ford be opened at the usual place of crossing. James McCarrell is apptd. Constable in the room of James Green and it is ord. that he be summoned and sworn accdg. to law. Ord. that a platt containing one hundred and eight four acres of land in Botetourt County on Back Creek, also a hundred and sixty acres joining the same property of John Pukirman be certified, it appearing to the court that he had taken the regular steps of the law in this case made & provided. This ct. is adjd. till tomorrow morning, ten o'clock. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by Adam Smyth At a ct. contd. & held for Botetourt County the 12th of April, 1782. Present: Geo. Skillern, Adam Smyth, Pat Lockhart & Wm. Neelly, Gent. Justices. George Hancock, Gent., having made affidavit that he obtained a licence to practice the law as an attorney of this Colony in the year 1774 which he has lost is permitted by the court to qualify and to practice as an attorney and accdgly. he took the oath. Administration of the estate of Wm. Madison, Gent., decd., is granted to Wm. Preston, Andrew Lewis and Thomas Madison, Wm. Preston and Thomas Madison, having first taken the oath prescribed by law, entered into bond with Caleb Wallace and Wm. Neelly, their securities. Andrew Lewis is to give bond and security at the next court. Ordered that Colo. James Robinson, Colo. Hugh Crockett, Captain James Barnett and Colo. David Robinson, being first sworn, do appraise in current money the slaves, if any, and personal estate of the said Wm. Madison, Gent., decd., and make return of the same to the court. Ord. that a child of Margaret Laird called by the name of Yancy be bound to Charles McFadden accdg. to law. Augustine Webb is apptd. Constable in Capt. Looney's Company, and it is ord. that he summoned & sworn accdg. to law. Ord. that the Sheriff summon 24 of the most discreet and capable freeholders in the County to appear here at next May court to serve as a Grand Jury of Inquest for the body of this County. Ordered that Lawrence Conner a wounded Continental soldier shall be provided for at present by the County and if Mr. Saml. Woods will maintain him this court shall make full provision for the same at the next levy. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till tomorrow morning, nine o'clock. The mins. of these predgs. were signed by George Skillern At a ct. contd. & held for Botetourt County the 13th of April, 1782. Present: Geo. Skillern, Adam Smyth, Pat Lockhart & Thomas Rowland, Gent. Justices. James Robinson, Revd. Caleb Wallace, Joseph Looney, Robert Harvey, Saml. Todd & Mathew Wilson are recommended to his Excellency the Governor as proper persons to be added to the Commission of the Peace for this County. Ord. that the Sheriff summon Uriah Humphries, late Deputy Sheriff, to appear at a court to be held at the courthouse on the 26th instant to shew cause why he shall not be fined for not summoning sundry witnesses to appear at a called court held on Spencer Humphries. Whereas Michael Ohair was by a former order of this court fined in the sum of £200 for contempt of the authority of the court, on consideration of his good behaviour as well as his exertions in defence of this country, it is ordered that the fine be remitted. This ct. is adjd. till Friday the 26th of this instant. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by Geo. Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 26th of April, 1782. Present: Geo. Skillern, Adam Smyth, Pat Lockhart and Thos. Rowland, Gent. Justices. Old. that Uriah Humphries, late Dep.
