Present: Geo. Skillern, Pat Lockhart, John Armstrong, William Davidson & Robert Poage, Gent. Justices. Wm. Davidson's list of tithables was retd. to court and is ord. to be certfd. Also a list of the taxable property taken by said Davidson in the bounds of Captain Beard's and Pryor's Companies of Militia. Thomas Madison is apptd. guardian to Anne Lewis, orphan of theeHonorable Andrew Lewis, Gent., decd., who entered into bond in the sum of two thousand pounds with Geo. Skillern and Wm. McClcnachan, his securities. Wm. McClenachan entd. into & acknd. bond with Geo. Skillern and Thomas Madison his securities in the sum of ten thousand pounds to the Governor for his true and faithful collection of the taxes in this County levied by Act of Assembly. Wm. McClenachan took the oath prescribed by law of Lieut. Colo, of the Militia in this County. The Grand Jury appeared in court and were sworn, to wit: Samuel Walker, Junr., Alexr. McDonald, Saml. McRoberts, Thomas Gillis, James McConnel, Andrew Armstrong, Wm. Craddock, Robert Andeven, Moses Tullis, Benjamin West, Uriah Humphries, Saml. Baldwin, Jesse Clark, Andrew Woods and John Lapsley, who having recd, their charge went out of court to consider of their presentments, &c. On the petition of John Taylor leave is grtd. him to keep an ordinary at his house in the County, he having entd. into bond with Captain Mills his security according to law. The same to Thomas Crow at Crow's Ferry in this County, he having entd. into bond with John Mills his security in the sum of fifty pounds accdg. to law. The Grand Jury retd. into court and prestd. the following persons, towit: We of the Grand Jury present the Surveyor of the Road from the Stone House to the County line by the widow Dusing's for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the Road from the Creek beyond Mr. Woods' to Mr. Breckinridge's the same as above. Also Robert Burdwell for not keeping the road in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the Road from the Beaver Dams to the ford of James River for not keeping the same in repair. Also Moses Allen for (word "not" omitted) keeping the road in repair from the Pedlar Ford down James River to the end of his bounds. And also the Surveyor of the remainder of the road to Anderson's Ferry for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also Wm. Anderson and James Black for stopping the old road from Crow's to Anderson's Ferry down the river contrary to the law. Also the Surveyors of tho Road from Saml. Young's up Catawba and over Roanoake to the County line for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the road from Alexr. Baines to Moses Dunlop's for (word "not" omitted) keeping the same in repair. Also John Buyers for retailing liquors without licence. Ordered that summons issue against the several persons this day presented by the Grand Jury returnable here at the next court. Pat Lockhart and Thomas Rowland, Gent., are apptd. to value the Commissioner's Lands in the County. James Rowland, Surveyor of the Road from Hall's Run to Catawba, and James McCaul from the ford of Catawba by James Rowland's to James Dalzel's and Pat Lockhart to divide the tithables between the said Surveyors that formerly worked under Curtis Alderson. Ordered that James Taylor be recommended to his Excellency the Governor as a fit person to execute the office of a Captain in the Militia of this County in the room of Stephen Holston, who hath resigned that office, and Henry Walker, Lieutenant in the room of James Taylor, and James Calvert, Ensign, in the room of his brother Robert, who hath also resigned that office. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till tomorrow at ten o'clock. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by Geo.
