Present: Geo. Skillern, Pat Lockhart, William Ward, James Barnet and Samuel Todd, Gent. Justices. Ord. that the sum of eight pounds be allowed to Geo. McArnold for one horse furnished the Volunteers to Carolinia and lost at the Adkin Skirmish Ord. that the Sheriff summon twenty four of the most capable freeholders in this County to appear here at the next court to serve as a Grand Jury of Inquest for the body of this County. James Wiers is exempt from paying County & Parish levies in future on account of the wounds which he received at Colo. Bufford's defeat in Carolinia and by which he is greatly disabled. Ralph Jefferson the same on account of his age & infirmity. John McCallistcr is apptd. Surveyor of the Road from James Brown't to the turn of the waters at the head of Sund Creok, who with the hands on Dunlop's Creek and Ugsley Creek to attend said Surveyor when required to keep said road in repair as the law directs. Ord. that Archibald Woods, John Armstrong, Joseph Ward & John McClelan being first sworn do view the way proposed by Walter Smiley's for altering the road round his plantation & make report of the conveniences & inconveniences of the same to the court. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till tomorrow morning, eight o'clock. The mins. of these prcdgs. were signed by Geo. Skillern At a court contd. & held for Botetourt County the 11th day of October, 1782. Valentine Humm Plff. ) agst. ) In Case Andrew Hawke Deft. ) This day came tho parties &c. & also a jury, towit: Wm. Anderson, Robt. McNeelly, Wm. Martin, Wm. Read, Wm. Henderson, Godfree Hamilton, Saml. Baldwin, James Wills, John Smith, James McCaul, Isaao Vanmeater and Joseph Snodgrass, who retd. a verdt. awarding damages to plff. of ten pounds sventeen (word omitted) and six pence current money, Judgt. accdgly. and costs. A licence is granted to Jacob Carper to keep an ordinary at his house in this County, he having entd. into bond in the sum of fifty pounds accdg. to law with David May his security. Ord. that Fanny Hudson orphan of Elizabeth Anna Hudson be bound to Albert Harvey, Gent., according to law. Ord. that Esthew Gew, orphan of Sarah Gew, be bound to Thomas Clammons according to law. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till court in course.
