Present: George Skillern, Patrick Lockhart, Martin McFarran, William Nesly & Samuel Todd, Gent. Justices. A report of a road was made & retd. by John Armstrong, John McClalon and Joseph Ward agreeable to an order of court, it is ordered that the said road be established agreeable to the report. John Vanlier is apptd. Surveyor of the Road in the room of Robert King who was dischd. from that office Ord. that John Vanlier, Wm. Robinson and Robert King being first sworn do view the road from Robert King's by John Henderson's house to John Vanlier's tan yard and make report thereof to the court. A Grand Jury appeared in court and were sworn, towit: George Poage, James Evans, Wm. Snodgrass, Edward Green, Uriah Humphries, Jesse Clark, James Green, Peter Shaver, John Bailey, Godfree Hamilton, Christopher Jackson, Robert Harris, Junr., Josiah Phipps, Wm. Ritchey, and John Drake, who having received their charge went out of court to consider of their presentments &c. Upon the petition of sundry inhabitants of this County leave is given to Josiah Phipps to build a water grist mill over Looney's Mill Creek below the two fords on Paxton's land where David Laird formerly lived. David May procd. a commission from the Governor apptg. his Eschcator for this County, whereupon he took the oath by law reqd. Robert Harris' ear mark is admitted to record, towit: a crop off the right car and a slit in the left. The Grand Jury retd. into ct. and presented the following persons, towit: We of the Grand Jury present the Surveyor of the Road from Anderson's Ferry to Ocletree for not keeping tho same in repair. Also the Surveyor the road from Crow's to Anderson's Ferry the same as above. Also the Surveyor, of the Road from the Pedlar Ford on James River to the turn of the waters on the Cowpasture River for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the Road from James Dalzell to the County line by Thos. Davis' for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Also the Surveyor of the Road from Hall's Run to the Pedlar Ford on James River for the same as above. Also the Surveyor of the Road called Capt. Crow's Road from the fork of his ferry for the same as above. Also Jacob Carper for retailing liquors unlawfully. Also the Surveyor of the Road from Pedlar Ford to Brown's passage for not keeping the same in repair as the law directs. Ord. that summons issue agst. the several persons this day prestd. by the Grand Jury returnable here at the next court. Ord. that the ct. be adjd. till the ct. in course.
