For 5 shillings, a tract of land in Botetourt on both sides of a Creek called Buffalo, in the North Fork of James River, containing 94 acres; being a part of 200 acres which was a part of 400 acres granted to Joseph Long by patent bearing date 25 July 1746. Said Joseph Long willed to his sons Joseph and John Long (see Augusta County Will of Joseph Long). Joseph Long, the younger, sold these 94 acres to Michael Kirkham for a period of one year (or leased). This land where Joseph Long, the elder, has a tub mill and all houses, buildings, orchards, ways, waters, watercourses, profits, commodities, hereditaments, and appurtenances, for a period of one year. Court Deed Book 1 p. 486-487 This Indenture made the tenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy three Between Jonathan WHITTLEY of Botetourt County in Virginia of the one part and (to) George POAGE of the same county of the other part.... sum of one hundred and seventy pounds current money....Certain Tracts or parcels of Land contining one hundred and forty eight acres being in and lying in the County of Botetourt on the main branch of James River opposite to the mouth of Craigs Creek one of which tracts was granted to said Whitley by Patent dated July the fourth one thousand seven hundred and fifty nine and bounded....mentions down several courses of the river and crossing the end of a mountain to the beginning. The other tract or parcel of land containing forty eight acres adjoining the above described tract was granted to said Whittley by patent dated August the twenty seven one thousand seven hundred and seventy and bounded...
