HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: There are two markers for the grave of General Evan Shelby. One of them is in the shape of a tombstone with a cross at the top and the following inscription: Evan SHELBY Indiana Brig. General Va. Military Rev. War 1794 The otheer marker is of iron, shaped like a coffin lying flat on the grave with this inscription: General Evan SHELBY Died Dec. 4-1794 Aged 74 General Shelby was first buried where the First Presbyterian Church now stands, and was later removed to this cemetery. To the Memory of Abram FULKERSON 1834 – 1902 Soldier, lawyer, Legistlator, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, class of 1857, and a pupil of Thomas J. Jackson, Afterwards known as “Stonewall”. Major of the 19th and Colonel of the 63rd Tenn. Regiments of Inft. C.S.A. 1861-1865. Served ten years as Delegate and Senator in the Legislature of Virginia from Washington County, and as a Member of the 47th Congress of the U.S. from the 9th Virginia District. WOOD (No dates given on latter) This is one of the largest and handsomest monuments in this cemetery. It is made of marble and white pressed brick. The foundation is of granite; on this base is built first a square of white pressed brick on which is another layer of marble, and so on; each section tapering until the top is about one-fourth the size of the base. Egg dart moulding of different sized was used to cap each section. Panels in the brick sections were inserted as plated on which the names of the family were engraved.
