He was the son of the late George and Byerc Smith Cox and was a native of Bristol. He was retired from Ford Motor Company in Ypsilanti, Mich., where he had worked from 1966-1994. He had previously worked for the Bristol Tennessee Fire Department from 1961-1966. He was a former member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Bellville, Mich., and had been a member of the Wayne Lodge 112 in Michigan. After returning to Bristol he transferred his membership to the Zollicoffer Lodge in Bluff City. In 1997, he became a member of the Jericho Shrine Temple and had served the past four years in the Fez Patrol. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1954-1958. Survivors include: wife, Margaret "Peggy" Camper Cox; son, Timothy Edward Cox of Bristol Tennessee; daughter, Carla Anderson Cooks and husband Joseph of Bristol Tennessee; grandson, Jeff Anderson and wife Amber of Blountville; granddaughter, Crystal Rowe and husband Scott; three special great- grandchildren, Abram and Savannah Anderson and Makalya Rowe; brother, Daniel Allen Cox of Elkin, N.C.; sisters, Anna Overcash of Washington, D.C., and Margaret Slagle and husband Jim of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Roosevelt Cox; and sisters, Ella Arnold Mullins and Nellie Odum Jones. Masonic services will be held on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel by the Zollicoffer Lodge 444. Funeral services will follow the Masonic service with Rev. Steve Brown officiating. Committal services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery with military honors presented by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975. Pallbearers include Allen Bennett, Christopher Brackett, Jerry Quinley, Richard Hoops, Mitchell Crusenberry and Tony Slagle.
