She firmly believed that our lives do not end when we die but simply change. She held a bachelor of arts degree from Oregon University and a master of arts degree from Stanford University in California. She was a teacher for many years in California and in France. She tutored in Kingsport's literacy programs and was a volunteer teacher at St. Anne's School in Bristol. Mrs. Cuddy was a genealogist with membership in the Jamestown Society, Charlemagne Royal Order and many others. For years she wrote the newspaper column on genealogy titled, "Steps to the Past." Jo Ann had a life long love of classical music and was a charter fund raiser for the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra of which her late brother was founder and conductor. She was organist for St. Ann's Chapel at Stanford University. She served on the local board of MACO and the Music Club. She enjoyed international travel and biblical archeology. In Connecticut, she was a founding member of the Birthright Chapter. Born in Boise, Idaho, to Ted and Aileen Whitson, she was the wife of Dan J. Cuddy; mother of daughter, Celia A. Cuddy of Burlington, Vermont; and son, Tom J. Cuddy of Austin, Texas; grandmother of granddaughter, Lucy Ann; and grandson, Seamus; sister of Thomas Whitson of Santa Rose, Calif.; and sister- in-law, of Dr. Gerald Cuddy of East Haven, Conn., and Rev. John J. Cuddy of Macon, Ga. She was recently preceded in death by her brother, William Whitson of Palo Alto, Calif. A memorial mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Anne's Catholic Church with Rev. John J. Cuddy, the celebrant, and Rev. Timothy E. Keeney, the concelebrant. Inurnment will follow in St. Anne's Church Cemetery Wall of Remembrance. The Rosary will be said Friday evening at 6 o'clock at Oakley- Cook Funeral Home. The JoAnn Whitson Cuddy Scholarship Fund has been established for St. Anne's School. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Fund, c/o St. Anne's School, 300 Euclid Ave., Bristol VA 24201. Condolences and memories may be sent to the family at condolences@oakley- cook.com.
