Mrs. Dowell was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Russell County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Houston Litton and Lucy Fogleman Litton. She had resided in Bristol Virginia, until she recently moved to live with her son, Jeff Dowell, in Mount Airy, N.C. She had worked for Gordon Garment for many years until her retirement. As a longtime member of North Bristol Baptist Church, she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. Bess was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She loved her family, church and friends. Mrs. Dowell was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, John H. Dowell; five sisters; and five brothers. Survivors include a son, Jeff Dowell and daughter-in-law, Caprice Dowell of Mount Airy; a granddaughter, Shasta Dowell of Mount Airy; one sister, Karla Counts of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eric Godfrey officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry McClellan, Matt McClellan, Zach Burnett, Bob Harrison, Bud Turner, Robbie Turner and Paul Litton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Akard Funeral Home. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family of Mrs. Dowell at akardfh@peercom.net.
