Buchanan Funeral Service is in charge. June K. Sargent BIG STONE GAP -- June K. Sargent, 67, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, in Ridgecrest Nursing Home in Duffield. She lived most of her life in Big Stone Gap and was a daughter of Pat Sargent and Mable Sargent of Big Stone Gap. She spent her adult life working in nursing homes or hospitals and retired form Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Big Stone Gap. She was of the Methodist faith. Surviving, besides her parents, are a brother, Jack Sargent of Big Stone Gap; a nephew and three nieces. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 7 p.m. in Gilliam Funeral Home. Smythe CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A memorial service in celebration of the life of Eleanor S. Smythe was conducted Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Smythe, 67, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bristol Tennessee, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999. She was a daughter of Margaret G. Soud of Jacksonville and a graduate of Landon High School in Jacksonville and Sullins College in Bristol. She was the former wife of the late Dr. Jules W. Smythe. Surviving, besides her mother, are a son, Jules W. Smythe Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a daughter, Preston S. Beck of Novelty, Ohio; three brothers, the Rev. Eugene Soud of Newport News, Dr. Robert S. Soud and Dr. Gary G. Soud, both of Jacksonville; a sister, Jacquelyn Deckel of West Springfield, Va.; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Among survivors are a son-in-law, Scott Beck of Novelty; grandsons Eric and Geoffrey Beck, both of Novelty; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Smythe recently moved to Cleveland to be near family. Throughout her life her sense of humor in the face of adversity and her strong Christian faith were an inspiration to those who knew her. Taylor ABINGDON -- Funeral services for Henry Clay Taylor will be conducted Monday at 3:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Paul Price will officiate. He was a son of the late Alex and Susie Counts Taylor and was a retired barber employed in Haysi for many years. He a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Dickenson First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Trulah Counts Taylor; two sons, Teddy Michael "Mickey" Taylor of Clintwood, Va., and Jeffrey Taylor of Louisville, Ky.; three daughters, Diana Gayle Taylor of Lexington, Ky., Thana Kay Connelly of Berea, Ky., and Lisha Renee Arfield of Abingdon; one sister, Buena Davis of Bristol Virginia; three brothers, Clay Taylor of Haysi, Herbert Taylor of Southpoint, Ohio, and Edwin Taylor of Kingsport; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Richard Hicks will officiate. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery, Lick Creek, with military graveside rites by Dickenson County Post 8979 and DAV Chapter 35. Mr. Taylor was also preceded in death by two sisters, Della Taylor and Pearl Stapleton; and three brothers, Estil Taylor, Aubra Taylor and Littleton Taylor. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends.
