He moved to Abingdon in 1944 and had lived in Bristol for 34 years. He was a member of Suburban Christian Church and retired from Island Creek Coal Co. in 1979. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Walter and Madie Musick Crouse. He lived in the Drill area, near Honaker, for many years and moved to the Gardner community in 1974. He and his wife operated Crouse's Grocery in Drill for several years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the infantry on the Phillipine Islands. He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed with Island Creek Coal Co. at VP 1 and a member of UMWA Local 1589 in Oakwood. He was the widower of Maude Martin Crouse. Surviving are a son, Roger Crouse of Honaker; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Jean) Griffith of Blacklick, Ohio, and Fay Perkins of Mount Vernon, Ohio; a brother, Curtis Crouse of Mount Vernon; and two granddaughters. Gent Sr. ABINGDON -- Charles Harvey "Bud" Gent Sr., 64, of 21055 Shepard Lane, formerly of Honaker, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, in the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He was born in Honaker, a son of the late Fred B. and Gay Munsey Gent. He lived in Honaker until moving to Abingdon 11 years ago. He was president of Big Fork Coal Co., president and owner of Genwal Coal Co. in Huntington, Utah, and was former co-owner of Honaker Supply Co. and Honaker Funeral Home. He was a 1952 graduate of Honaker High School and attended Greenbrier Military Academy and Virginia Tech. He was a member of the Pruner Masonic Lodge 254 AF&AM of Honaker, Royal Arch Commandary of Castlewood and Kazim Temple of Roanoke. He was a member and past patron of the Count's Chapter 180 Order of the Eastern Star of Honaker. He was a member of the ACBL Association, a former member of the Board of Trustees of Southwest Virginia Community College, a former member of the Honaker Lion's Club and a member of the Bristol Country Club. Surviving are his wife, Evangeline Whited Gent; a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Angela) Ball of Rosedale, Va.; two sons, Charles Harvey Gent Jr. and Robert Allen Gent, both of Honaker; three sisters, Virginia MacLeod of Kilmarnock, Va., Helen Coulling of Bleufield, W.Va., and Geanette Lewis of Lebanon; and six grandchildren. Mohl Sr. Leonard Martin Mohl Sr., a Korean War veteran who had been working to establish a Bristol memorial to veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars, died Monday, Nov. 15, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was 68. A native of Chicago, Mohl moved to Bristol Tennessee after his retirement and was involved in numerous veterans activities. A purple heart recipient, he organized the Fred B. Dowell chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 1996, and had served as its president since then. He also served as the president of the Fraternal Veterans Council, organizer of the Bristol Veterans Day Parade, a former officer and continuing member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6975 and a member of the American Legion. Two years ago, he began efforts to establish a memorial for those wounded, killed and missing in action during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Bristol Tennessee leaders granted him permission to build the 12-foot memorial at the corner of Volunteer Parkway and Anderson Street. In order to raise the money needed to erect the memorial, Mohl designed a Korean War flag and was pursuing efforts to have it designated as the official flag for Korean War veterans. He coached Little League football and men's and women's softball for 14 years. She was employed with the former Hecht's Bakery for more than 20 years and was a cafeteria employee in the Bristol Virginia School System for 17 years. He spent most of his life in Bristol Virginia, attended Hiltons Elementary and graduated from Hiltons High School in 1953. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany and was employed with Valleydale Packers for 33 years. After its closing, he was employed with Bristol Compressors until retirement in 1998. He was a member and deacon of Blue Springs Primative Baptist Church and was lead singer with the Bowlin Family Singers. He attended Virginia Tech and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the mail service in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked briefly in Washington, D.C., and moved to Richmond where he worked for Topps Co. for 30 years. He relocated to Mt. Airy in 1950, where he retired as regional sales manager of Topps in 1980. He co-owned and operated Jerry Lewis Cinema in Mt. Airy for a number of years after retirement. She began her career at Fort Bragg, N.C., where she was employed in the John F. Kennedy Center and School. She was assigned for three years to Fort Clayton in Panama, where she worked for the U.S. Army Security Assistance Latin America. She returned to Fort Bragg where she was with the 2nd Battalion, John F. Kennedy Center, in S3 Operations. She also worked with the Navy Seals. She spent the 1970s in Schwaebisch Hall, Germany, where she was involved in the Officers Wives Club and Army Community Services. Surviving are her husband, Ernest Eugene Addington Sr.; two sons, Joshua Wayne of Dante and Aaron William of Hicksville, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Norma Jean Addington and Debra Kennedy, both of Castlewood; two stepsons, evangelist Ernest "Ernie" Addington Jr. of Castlewood and Michael Addington of Dante; two sisters, Audrey Elizabeth Dishman and Patricia Ann Dishman, both of Fayetteville, N.C.; and three step-grandchildren. In the U.S. Army Security Assistance Latin America office, she was responsible for teams going to Central American countries, Medeteranian countries, Mexico and South American countries. In Germany, she was active in local communities. While in Europe, she traveled to Holland, England, Scotland, Paris, Rome, Greece and Sweden. While in Panama, she was elected to the Department of Defense School Board. After 15 years, she and her sons returned in 1992 to the beautiful mountains of Southwest Virginia in Dante. Ratliff Jr. MARION -- John Benjamin Ratliff Jr., 71, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Lookout Mountain, Ga., was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and retired from the Virginia State Police. He was a member of Smyth County Moose Lodge 1004, American Legion Post 18 and was a Mason. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was born in Detroit, a daughter of the late Zigmund Joseph Doll and Elizabeth Bukta Doll and was the widow of K.W. Starr. She was a graduate of Packard Business College in New York City and retired as benefits and personnel coordinator for National Radio Astronomy Observatory. She was a member of Charlottesville Senior Center, where she was the travel coordinator, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a niece, Mary T.
