Gentry Miss Josephine (Jody) Clayborn Gentry, 89, of Lebanon, Va., formerly of Bluefield, W.Va., passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, in a Lebanon, Va., hospital following a long illness. Born in Fayette County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Gertrude Smith Gentry. She was a graduate of Radford College in Radford, Va., and was listed in the Who's Who. She was a former teacher in McDowell and Tazewell County and was a retired principal of Dudley Elementary School in Bluefield, Va. She was honored upon her retirement by having the Dudley Elementary School Library named after her. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Bluefield, W.Va. Nancye Kilgore Bunn Nancye Ruth Kilgore Bunn died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Roanoke, Va. She was born May 5, 1911, in Wise, Va., and was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Martha Alice Sheppe Kilgore. The family moved to Bristol in 1920. Mrs. Bunn graduated with the Virginia High School Class of 1929 and later from Bristol Commercial College. She retired in 1983 as secretary and real estate broker from the Charles J. Lowry Agency and was for many years the secretary of the Bristol Board of Realtors. She received honors from the Virginia State Board of Realtors. Mrs. Bunn was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bristol, the Friendship Sunday School Class and the Evelyn Lane Frost Group of the WMU. She had an abiding interest in the Haven of Rest Rescue Mission and was a member of its Women's Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Bristol Historical Society and the Classic Review Study Club. While living in the Roanoke Valley in recent years, Mrs. Bunn attended Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and participated in the Joy Sheffy Circle. She also attended meetings of the Roanoke Alliance for the Visually Enabled (RAVE). Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Kay B. and Richard Smith of Roanoke, Va.; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law: Matthew R. and Wendy E. Smith of Richmond, Va.; three great-grandchildren: Jarred Luke Smith, Sarah Lawren Smith and Thomas Richard Smith; two brothers and three sisters-in-law: Charles T. and Sara R. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict serving in the U.S. Army and a member of the UMWA District 28. A longtime resident of Kingsport, Joan spent most of her life in radio and theater. She was managing director of the Olde West Dinner Theater, cultural arts director for the City of Kingsport responsible for starting programs such as Allandale Christmas Village, cultural programs for the deaf and Christmas Connection, an annual arts and crafts show and sale. She was well known as the owner/director of the successful Showboat Dinner Theater. She also established the Rollabout Theater, a senior citizen theater, several children's theater groups and wrote children's books. Joan was a member of Kiwanis and Altrusa. She received numerous awards for outstanding service from various community and professional organizations and served on the Grovernor's Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities. Mr. Montgomery had worked at H&R Block as district manager and was an enrolled agent for Bristol and Southwest Virginia. He was also very active with the Republican Party where he served as financial chairman for Jim Holcomb's campaign and treasurer for both the Gil Hodges and Bob Icenhour campaigns. After his retirement from H&R Block he became very active with Heritage Antiques and Collectibles and was an avid gardner. He was a member and elder at First Christian Church where he served on the Stewardship Committee, was chairman of the board and sang in the choir. Harold Cunningham Harold Buford "Doc" Cunningham, 57, of Blountville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, of an apparent heart attack. He was employed by the Sullivan County Department of Education in the maintenance department for almost 25 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Strong Nickels WEBER CITY, Va. -- Mrs. Lois V. Strong Nickels, 99, of 108 Greenwood Drive, passed away at her home and went to be with her heavenly family on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000. She was born May 21, 1901, in Scott County, Va. She was the daughter of the late William B. and Lula Greear Strong. She was the oldest member of Gate City United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde W. Nickels; two sons, Harry Nickels and George Nickels; two grandsons, Russell Nickels and Robert Fields; three sisters, Clara Strong, Emma Horne and Arvilla Collier; and daughter-in-law, Juanita Nickels. Darrell Allan Poe ABINGDON, Va. -- Darrell Allan Poe, 42, a resident of Abingdon, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at his residence. He worked as a partner for the Abingdon law firm of Bradford & Poe from 1990 to 1999 prior to being appointed Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Washington County in January 2000. He received a B.A. degree in philosophy in 1987 from the University of Virginia. He received his J.D. Law in 1990 from Washington & Lee University. He was an active Rotarian where he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award in September 2000. He taught constitutional law for police officers at Virginia Highlands Community College. Survivors include: his wife, Kelli L. Poe of Abingdon; his parents, Nancy F. and Harold W. Burton (stepfather) and George L. Poe of Richmond; two stepchildren, Kym and Colin Lavigne, both of Abingdon; three brothers, Keith R. Poe of Brookfield, Wis., Chris S. Poe of Richmond and Mike L. Bill Scheuer III William Edward "Bill" Scheuer III, 45, of Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and had lived in Bristol most of his life. He was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and a 1977 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a B.S. degree in marketing. He was formerly employed with Atlantic Envelope and most recently was a sales associate with the Business Forms and Labels Division of Moore North American. He was the recipient of numerous sales awards and was recognized for his outstanding achievement with both companies. He was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church, where he was involved in the Koinonia Sunday School Class and as a former chair of the evangelism committee. He was a member of the Bristol Morning Rotary Club. He coached several youth athletic teams with the Bristol YMCA and Bristol Leisure Services. Bill's family members include his wife of 22 years, Leigh Foulk Scheuer; his daughter, Stephanie, and his son, Will, both of the home; his mother and father, Joan and Bill Scheuer of Bristol, Tenn.; two aunts, Helen Young and Jean Johnson; two uncles, Jack Scheuer and Paul Scheuer; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Colleen and Carl Foulk; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gloria and Ken Oster and Janet and Bill Shannon. Thomas, 71, of Kingsport, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn., after a period of declining health. Dale was born March 18, 1929, in Bristol, Va., a son of the late Arthur and Mary VanHook Thomas. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. Dale retired in 1987 from the Tenite Department of the Tennessee Eastman Company as a mechanic, after 39 years of service. He was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church and served as a deacon and was a member of the church choir. He was a kind sincere and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Dale is surviving by his loving wife of 48 years: Jean Clayman Thomas of the home; a son and daughter-in-law: Greg Thomas and his wife, Nancy, of Cleveland, Tenn.; and three grandchildren: Abbey, Andrew and Anna; his sister: Carol Medlin of Corbin, Ky.; and brothers: Kenneth Thomas of Blountville and Charles Thomas of Palm Harbor, Fla. She was a long-time member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, E.F.
