Cole, 69, 177 Taylor Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Cole was a native of the New Bethel community of Sullivan County, Tenn., and had lived in this area his entire life. He was a son of the late Elbert and Pansy Goforth Cole. Mr. Cole was a semi-retired cabinet maker with East Tennessee Case Works. He was a Methodist. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cole was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte L. Peters Cole; one son, Gary Cole, Chattanooga, Tenn.; three daughters, Judy Wiley and Lisa Clark, both of Johnson City, and Teresa Whitlock, Piney Flats; one brother, George Cole, Franklin, Ky.; one sister, Carrie Mellons, Piney Flats; three grandchildren, Aaron Cole, Poinsaini, Fla.; Brandi Hicks and Angie Hammons, both of Johnson City; four great-grandchildren, Terra Ellis, Kayley Sells, Alissa Cole and Zakkary Wiseman; and several nieces and nephews. A lifelong resident of Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Henry E. and Ola Kegley Addison. She was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church and was a life member of the United Methodist Women of the church. She was the widow of Arthur Combs. He was a native of Sullivan County. He attended Chillicothe Business College and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a native of Kentucky and a graduate of Grundy High School. Mr. Pass had been a resident of Hendersonville, Tenn., before moving to Abingdon. He was a retired employee of Proctor & Gamble Company with 32 years of service. He was a loving and caring father and hero to his sons. Wednesday, December 27, 2000 Mamie Wyatt Blevins PULASKI, Va. -- Mamie Lea Wyatt Blevins, 69, departed this life early Saturday morning, Dec. 23, 2000, at Pulaski Community Hospital after a long illness. She was born March 11, 1931, in Sullivan County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Franklin Wyatt and Virginia Lou Phillips Wyatt. She was a devoted mother and beloved grandmother and great-grandmother of a very large family residing around the Pulaski community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Avery Blevins; one grandson, Lee Blevins; four brothers, Clay Wyatt and Ray Wyatt, both of Ohio, Glenn Wyatt and Harold "Doc" Wyatt, both of Bristol, Tenn.; and one sister, Margaret Gentry of Cookeville, Tenn. She attended the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer. Bryant Margaret Ellen Bryant of Bristol died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Asbury Center at Baysmont in Kingsport. She was born in Chilhowie, Va., a daughter of the late James Edward and Frances Belle Faris Bryant. She was a member of the Cradle Roll at Chilhowie Methodist Church. When she was 3 or 4 years old, the family moved to Marion. She attended the Marion schools, was a graduate of Marion College and received her masters degree from Radford University. Miss Bryant began her teaching career in a one-room school. She had lived in Bristol since 1941. She taught the first grade in elementary school for 43 years, 38 of which were at Fairmount School in Bristol, and retired in 1974. She was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Board and the Board of Finance. She was president of the United Methodist Women and chaired various committees. Miss Bryant served as president of the Bristol Tennessee Retired Teachers Association where she helped establish the Retired Teachers Scholarship for Tennessee students interested in teaching. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for teachers, American Association of University Women, the U.W.C.A., the Teachers Bridge Club and the Women's Literary Club. She enjoyed reading gardening and hiking. She was a great lover of nature and, most of all, loved children and her church. Miss Bryant is survived by a special friend, Virginia Brockman of Kingsport; and two nieces, Sue Bryant Parker and Barbara Richardson, both of Roanoke. Theodore Lee Collier Sr. BIG STONE GAP, Va. -- Theodore "Ted" Lee Collier Sr., 59, was a gift to God given on Christmas Day. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Appalachia. He was most recently employed at Wallace Hardware as a sales representative and was previously employed at AFG Industries in Kingsport, Central Supply in Andover and United Central Supply. He was a member of Hoge Masonic Lodge No. 0008 in Wise and a member of the VFW in Rogersville. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam conflict. He lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap, moving from Surgoinsville, Tenn. Mrs. Remsburg a resident of Abingdon died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Josephine B. DeShazo, in Spencer, Va. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, where she served as an elder and on several committees. She was born Sept. 4, 1290, in Raleigh County, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Brent Remsburg, a former town manager of Abingdon; her father, Mr. Joseph Baron; and mother, Mrs. Ella Baron. Survivors other than her sister, are two nephews, Tommy and Charley; and two nieces, Julie and Helen Jo DeShazo. Mrs. Remsburg taught in the Washington County Virginia School System for eight years before her retirement. Before coming to Washington County, she taught in Martinsville City Schools, Longwood College, as an instructor and assistant professor, and in Halifax County and Fairfax County. She taught a total of 40 years and 7 months. Mrs. Remsburg received many awards and honors. While a teacher with the Washington County School System, Mrs. Remsburg was honored by the VPI & SU Chapter of Sigma XI as the Outstanding Science Teacher of Southwest Virginia. She received her BS from Longwood College and graduate from University of Virginia. Mrs. Remsburg was a member and officer of many organizations. Here in Washington County, she was a member of the Booklovers Club where she was past president and president of the Abingdon Garden Club. She was a master gardener, a member of the Abingdon Tree Committee, liaison between the Southwest Virginia Garden Club and the Barter Theatre for the Shakespearian Garden. She served on the Virginia Highlands Festival Board and was a member of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association. She was awarded the Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award. She was Southwest District Chairman Arboreta and Botanical Garden. Mrs. Remsburg is a state and national life member of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, past president of the Virginia Association of Garden Clubs, state chairman of the Book Review Committee, past president of the Virginia Science Museum in Richmond and was instrumental in the biology section in Richmond. She was a member of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. Mrs. Remsburg was a past president of the Junior Academy of Science and Virginia Academy of Science. Marvin Byington NICKELSVILLE, Va. -- Marvin Leon Byington passed away Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, while caring for cattle at his farm near Nickelsville. Born Feb. 4, 1928, he was the son of the late William "Bill" Byington and the late Jennie Dorton Byington. Marvin grew up in the Grassy Creek area of Castlewood, Va. As a youth he and his family attended Grassy Creek Union Church. A 1946 graduate of Castlewood's Temple Hill High School, he entered the U.S. Army in 1952 and served his country in England. After returning from service, he began his work career with the Virginia Highway Department. Leaving the Highway Department to work for Road Builders, Inc., he supervised the building of various sections of the Interstate Highway System in North Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi. He returned to the Tri-Cities area to work for a private asphalt contractor, Kingsport Asphalt. He retired in 1978 to pursue his love of farming and thoroughly enjoyed it until his death. He was loved and will be missed by his family and neighbors. In addition to his parents, a sister, Elaine Byington Addington McClellan preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy Katherine Marshall Byington; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy Lee and JoAnn Madden Byington of Kingsport; brother and sister-in-law, Carlye and Alma Byington of Nickelsville; a niece; and several nephews and cousins. Thomas Clarke Rhea LAWTON, Okla. -- Dr. Thomas Clarke Rhea died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, in Southwestern Hospital in Lawton. He was born in Blountville, Tenn., a son of the late John Irvin and Retta Slagle Rhea, graduated from Holston High School in 1931, King College in 1935 and Louisville Seminary in 1938, receiving his MA degree from the Seminary in 1939. He began his pastoral work at Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Versailles, Ky., and was executive of Lexington Ebenezer Presbytery, 1944-50. He served Rogersville Presbyterian Church as pastor for 20 years before serving as Holston Presbytery executive 1970-84. He served on the King College Board of Trustees for 15 years and received an honorary doctorate from King College in 1954. In 1982, he was elected moderator of the Synod of the mid-South. he retired in 1984. He was the widower of Bobbie Rhea. Surviving are three sons: Thomas Rhea Jr. of Franklin, Tenn., Robert Peter Rhea of Lawton and John I. "Jack" Durham, 66, of 2223 Island Road died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in Wellmont Hospice House. A native of Tazewell County, Va., he had lived all of his life in the Bristol area. He was a retired employee with Mason Dixon and owned Tri-State Automotive Parts of Blountville. He was a member of the King Masonic Lodge 461, Scottish Rite of Knoxville, Tenn., Jericho Temple Shrine and a member of the Jericho Marching Patrol. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 of Bristol, Tenn. Born to the late Joseph Austin and Stella Nannie Clark Eads, he had moved back to Bristol 12 years ago from Richlands, Va., where he had lived since 1967. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a member of the choir, on the finance committee and was active in the Food Bank of the church. Paul retired from Nabisco Inc. with over 30 years of service. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many and will be missed by all. His parents; two brothers, Austin and Thurman Eads; and one sister, Naomi Stewart preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Stella Mae Worley Eads; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and husband Emory Houchins of Kingsport; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Harvey and wife, Carolyn, of Johnson City, Tenn., Jeff and wife, Dianna, of Bristol, Va., and Kevin Eads of Bristol, Va.; two brothers, R.D. Grubb, 67, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. John was born in Bristol, Va., March 27, 1933, a son of the late Andrew and Maggie Watson Grubb. John lived most of his life in Sullivan County. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the United States Air Force. He was a retired foreman of Tennessee Eastman Company. Other than his parents, eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. John was one of 13 children. John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Audrey Browder Grubb of Kingsport; his daughter, Debbie K. Gilliam of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Bryan Gilliam and April Gilliam of Kingsport; two sisters, Pauline Walls and Ida Luttrell; and two brothers, Andrew and Jessie Grubb. Millie was born in Sullivan County and was a lifelong resident of Bristol. She was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and Walters State College and attended Bristol Commercial College. She had worked in the classified department of the Bristol Herald Courier, was employed by the Sullivan County School System and taught at the Y.W.C.A. She was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church and was actively involved in the Christian Women's Club. She was a devoted mother, loving wife and homemaker. Horne; a daughter, Christin Horne Mustard and her husband, Jeff Mustard; her mother, Ruby Lunsford Carrier of Bristol, Tenn.; a sister, Tammy Carrier of Bristol, Tenn.; and a brother, Lawrence Carrier of Jonesborough, Tenn. Ann Gallaher Whitlow Ann Gallaher Whitlow of Bristol, Va., passed away on Dec. 27, 2000. Mrs. Whitlow was born and raised in Fountain City, Tenn., and was a lifelong resident of Bristol. She was a loving mother, wonderful grandmother and all around special person. Her career as a corporate receptionist began with Enterprise Black Diamond in Bristol. She worked there for many years. She spent her remaining years of employment with Huff-Cook Insurance, also in Bristol. She retired from Huff-Cook in the early 90's. She was member of Central Christian Church in Bristol, Tenn. Mrs. Whitlow is survived by a family who will miss her very much: two sons, Van Whitlow of Dallas, Texas, and Dean Whitlow of Concord, Calif.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Whitlow Shaver and Matthew Whitlow, both of Concord, Calif.; one sister, Sarah Taylor of Copperhill, Tenn.; and one daughter-in-law and faithful caregiver, Ruth Whitlow.
