He graduated from both the McCallie School and Georgia Institute of Technology. He formed the Nickels-Saacke Corporation in Bristol Tennessee, specializing in real estate, building and development. This corporation developed Forest Hills III and Middlebrook subdivisions. Mr. Nickels was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Bristol County Club, the Bristol Board of Realtors and the Lions Club. He moved to Hilton Head in 1978, where he continued a career building home and condominiums. He as the president of Nickels and Associates of Hilton Head and was associated with Spinnaker Development Company. He was also a member of the South Carolina Board of Realtors. He is survived by his mother, Martha Nickels Preston, Grand Court, Bristol Virginia; four children, Dr. Michael Nickels and his wife, Kelly Kim, Hershey, Pa., Dr. Scott Nickels and his wife, Kelly, Nashville; Britt Nickels, Townsend, Ga., and Lauren Nickels, Hilton Head. Mr. Nickels is also survived by two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, J. Wood Nickels and his brother, Jack Nickels.
