He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in the Pacific and Okinawa during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with gold cluster, two Silver Stars, seven air medals and a Purple Heart. Following military service, he moved to Miami where he was a pilot with National Airlines and later for Pan American. At age 59, he retired to Beech Mountain. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty Thorn McCluer Alderson; a daughter, Betty A. Ingraham of Orono, Maine; two sons, Thomas M. Alderson of Nevada City, Calif., and William C. Alderson of Miami; a sister, Anne M. Thompson of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Creed F. Alderson Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. He lived in Wise County until the age of 12, when he moved with his family to Washington, D.C. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in the Pacific and Okinawa during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with gold cluster, two Silver Stars, seven air medals and a Purple Heart. Following military service, he moved to Miami where he was a pilot with National Airlines and later for Pan American. At age 59, he retired to Beech Mountain. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty Thorn McCluer Alderson; a daughter, Betty A. Ingraham of Orono, Maine; two sons, Thomas M. Alderson of Nevada City, Calif., and William C. Alderson of Miami; a sister, Anne M. Thompson of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Creed F. Alderson Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. He was born in Norton, a son of the late Creed Flanary Alderson and Mary Ford Alderson. He lived in Wise County until the age of 12, when he moved with his family to Washington, D.C. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in the Pacific and Okinawa during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with gold cluster, two Silver Stars, seven air medals and a Purple Heart. Following military service, he moved to Miami where he was a pilot with National Airlines and later for Pan American. At age 59, he retired to Beech Mountain. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty Thorn McCluer Alderson; a daughter, Betty A. Ingraham of Orono, Maine; two sons, Thomas M. Alderson of Nevada City, Calif., and William C. Alderson of Miami; a sister, Anne M. Thompson of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Creed F. Alderson Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Alderson, 76, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Norton, a son of the late Creed Flanary Alderson and Mary Ford Alderson. He lived in Wise County until the age of 12, when he moved with his family to Washington, D.C. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in the Pacific and Okinawa during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with gold cluster, two Silver Stars, seven air medals and a Purple Heart. Following military service, he moved to Miami where he was a pilot with National Airlines and later for Pan American. At age 59, he retired to Beech Mountain. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty Thorn McCluer Alderson; a daughter, Betty A. Ingraham of Orono, Maine; two sons, Thomas M. Alderson of Nevada City, Calif., and William C. Alderson of Miami; a sister, Anne M. Thompson of Springfield, Va.; a brother, Creed F. Alderson Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. Cox, 78, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Bethesda, Md. A son of Ely and Clementine Cox of Middlesboro, he was born in Middlesboro, Ky., one of 13 siblings. He moved to Alcoa in 1949 when he accepted a position with Harrison Cosntruction Co. He joined J.A. Jones construction in 1967, and worked in defense-related construction during the Vietnam War. After returning to the states, he worked on a number of TVA projects before retiring in 1972. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, flying B-17's over Germany, was a member of the Aloca United Methodist Church and the VFW. He was a longstanding member of the Masons and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 917. He was the widower of Dorothy Jean Hurt Cox. Surviving are two daughters, Cindy C. Wilson of Kensington, Md., and Lisa C. Fordiani of Madison Heights, Mich.; six brothers, Estel Cox, Dan Cox and Richard Cox, all of Harrogate, Tenn., Robert Cox of Speedwell, Tenn., Jim Cox of Maryville, Tenn., and Harvey Cox of Tazewell, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Wayland (Pat) Carr of Harrogate and Mrs. William L. Surviving are his wife, Didema Ilene Ramey Waters; four daughters, Patricia Cline of Roseann, Va., Sandra Epling of Big Rock, Va., and Regina Reynolds and Debbie Proffitt, both of Grundy; four sons, Timmy Waters and Brian Waters, both of Harman, Va., Christopher Waters of Grundy and Raymond Waters Jr. of Haysi; a sister, Emma Jean Ramey of Vansant; two brothers, Edmond Waters and Clyde Waters, both of Vansant; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
