She was born in Beckley, W.Va., a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. Lacy Basham. She had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the widow of Carl H. Atwell. She was a graduate of Knoxville Business College and a retired employee of the Virginia State Employment Commission in Bristol, Va., with 35 years of service. Surviving are two sisters, Anne B. Thompson and Beulah B. McCray, both of Bristol Virginia; two brothers, Chalmer Lacy Basham and John Calvin Basham, both of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. She was the widow of Connie Graden Quesenberry Sr. Surviving are a daughter, Constance Q. Fisher of Hiawassee, Ga.; a son, Connie G. She was known for having played 45 holes in one day, 18 with the ladies in the morning and 27 with the men in the afternoon. This was in the days before golf carts. She continued to live a full life at Baysmont, playing Bridge and Scrabble until the week before her death. Harmon Jackson Pippin Sr. BETHLEHEM, N.C. -- Harmon Jackson "Jack" Pippin Sr., 74, died Monday, June 5, 2000, in Catawba Memorial Hospital. He was born in Abingdon, a son of the late Buford and Inez Jackson Pippin. He was raised in Elizabethton, Tenn., and graduated from Science Hill High School in Johnson City in 1942. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the Army Medical Corps attached to the 82nd Airborne Divison in France. After his discharge from military service, he graduated from Columbia University in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in business. He moved to Bethpage, N.Y., and worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He became manager of financial planning at Idlewild and subsequently John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. He retired from the Port Authority and in 1979 moved to the Hickory, N.C., area. He worked part time as an estimator for Neil Grading. In the l930's, she began her amazing run of championship golf, winning the Women's Club Championship at the Country Club of Bristol 20 times from 1931-57, and there was no tournament held in three of those years. She was known for having played 45 holes in one day, 18 with the ladies in the morning and 27 with the men in the afternoon. This was in the days before golf carts. She continued to live a full life at Baysmont, playing Bridge and Scrabble until the week before her death. Harmon Jackson Pippin Sr. BETHLEHEM, N.C. -- Harmon Jackson "Jack" Pippin Sr., 74, died Monday, June 5, 2000, in Catawba Memorial Hospital. He was born in Abingdon, a son of the late Buford and Inez Jackson Pippin. He was raised in Elizabethton, Tenn., and graduated from Science Hill High School in Johnson City in 1942. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the Army Medical Corps attached to the 82nd Airborne Divison in France. After his discharge from military service, he graduated from Columbia University in 1951 with a bachelor of science degree in business. He moved to Bethpage, N.Y., and worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He became manager of financial planning at Idlewild and subsequently John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. He retired from the Port Authority and in 1979 moved to the Hickory, N.C., area. He worked part time as an estimator for Neil Grading. Surviving are his wife, Mary Anne Pippin; a daughter, Elizabeth Anne Pippin of Freeport, N.Y.; a son, Harmon Jackson Pippin Jr. of Garner, N.C.: a stepson, Kenneth Hodges of Newton, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Deby Hodges-Jackson of Newton; two brothers, Buford H.
