Carl Thomas HONAKER -- Carl "Jargo" Thomas, 74, of the Big A Mountain section, died Monday, May 8, 2000, in Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands. He was born in Drill, Va., a son of the late Walker "Jargo" and Chloe Russ Thomas. He had lived in the Honaker area most of his life. He was of the Holiness faith. He had worked in the coal mines for 36 years, retiring in 1979 from Island Creek Coal Co. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1374 at Oakwood, Va. Surviving are his wife, Louise Ellen Thomas; two sons, Robert Thomas of Raven, Va., and Johnny Thomas of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; eight daughters, Narcie Harris, Annagay Cox, Chloe Meade, Lucy Shepard and Crystal Thomas, all of Honaker, Diane Mosquera of Conway, S.C., Wanda Harris of Swords Creek, Va., and Tammy Williams of Myrtle Beach; a brother, Graden Thomas of Newark, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Carson (Artis) Baldwin of Rowe, Va., and Mrs. Barney (Sadie) Harris of Honaker; 24 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Clyde Lambert and Rick Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. Mr. Thomas was also preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ervin (Beulah) Penley; a brother, Nathan Thomas; and a grandson, Jeffery Dallas Harris. He was born in Benham, Va., a son of the late William Carson and Frances Kaylor Vanhook. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 8th Armored Division Infantry. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Vanhook; two sons, Maurice S. He was born in North Carolina and had lived in the Tri-Cities area for the past 54 years. He was a former employee of Volunteer Textiles and Burlington Mills. He was also a farmer. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was the widower of his first wife, Dora Eleanor Morton Willis. Surviving are his wife, Dora Adams Willis; a daughter, Eleanor Taylor of Blountville; a son, Carlie Willis Jr. of Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, Mack Willis Sr. and James Willis, both of North Carolina; two sisters, Ethel Buchanan and Millie Ledford, both of North Carolina; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
