Keen BAPTIST VALLEY, Va. -- Polly Catherine VanDyke Keen, 79, formerly of Keen Mountain, Va., died Feb. 14, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Baptist Valley, following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Patton and Catherine VanDyke. She was born on Dec. 5, 1921, and spent most of her life in Keen Mountain. Mrs. Keen had made her home in Baptist Valley the past five years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Berlin Keen; one daughter, Peggy Lou Keen; one twin sister, Mary Briggs; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Deskins. She is survived by four daughters, Marie Deskins of Baptist Valley, Joyce Worley of Rosedale, Va., Gaylene Morrow of Paintsville, Ky., and Brenda Phillips of East Bend, N.C.; one sister, Bernice Keen of Doran, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. Melvin, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. Mr. Melvin was a World War II field artillery and Army Air Corps veteran. He and his wife, Mary A. Millsap Melvin, were wed on April 6, 1944. Mr. Melvin was a member of the Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge \444, of Bluff City, the Charles Newton Bush Past Masters Association of East Tennessee and Eastern Star Lodge \414 of Bluff City, the Bristol Cancer Association, The Bristol Virginia Senior Adult Show Choir, the Fort Shelby Pioneer Club and a commissioner of the Weaver Pike Utility District. He retired from United Inter-Mountain Telephone Company. He was also a member and elder of Weaver Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, William H. (Howard) Melvin. Survivors include his wife, Mary A. Millsap Melvin; one daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and Joseph Jay of Bluff City; one son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Patsy Melvin of Bluff City; and one brother, John W. Mama was a born-again Christian who loved God and her family dearly. She was very proud of her loving husband, who watched over her as a guardian angel; her children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; and enjoyed spending time with each of them. She loved growing flowers, especially roses and going fishing. Even though she had been blind for the past 18 years, she worked in her flower gardens as much as possible and enjoyed shopping and attending church. She was a very independent woman and would not let her blindness get her down. Before becoming blind, Mama was a Sunday school teacher at the Gospel Tabernacle and made a great impact on every child she taught. She had always hoped to teach again someday. maybe she's doing just that. We're going to miss you, Mama! We love you. She was born in Ashe County, N.C., a daughter of the late Preston and Nora Phipps Cole. Mrs. Fillinger had resided in Bristol since 1967, moving from Logan County, W.Va. She was a certified nursing assistant employed at Bristol Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1981. Mrs. Fillinger was a member of the East Bristol Church of God. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Patrick Haynes, in 1968; and her second husband, Harlan Fillinger, in 1981; and by one son, Billy C. Haynes.
