Brewer, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the son's residence in Bristol, Va. She was born in Johnson County, Tenn., and had lived in Damascus, Va., most of her life. She was the widow of Jess Brewer and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Lee Taylor and her husband, Fred, of Bristol, Va.; one son, Steve Brewer and his wife, Arnita, of Bristol, Va.; one sister, Hazel Cornett of Damascus; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Dixon retired from the Veterans Administration after nearly 40 years of service as an x-ray technician and also in the recreation department. Born April 27, 1903, in Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late John and Sarah Elizabeth Fletcher Cox. She lived in the Lebanon area most of her life and was a member of the East Lebanon Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronnie Hubbard; four daughters; and two sons. Humphrey SALEM, Va. -- Maxie Willis Lewis Humphrey (Me-maw) (Chickie), 75, a native of Washington County, Va., left this earth to be comforted in the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001. Willis was a lady who lived to serve others from helping in the World War II effort, building planes to opening her house to pastors, missionaries or anyone in need who may have wandered to her door. Willis worked with food service in the Bristol and Salem schools and K & W Cafeteria, retiring from food service with the veterans hospital. She was a member of Meadowview Virginia Pentecostal Holiness Church. After coming to Salem in 1964, she became a member of Christian Life Fellowship Pentecostal Holiness Church. She served in many areas, putting forth much work toward women's ministries, where she will be greatly missed. Cooking was her passion and her family will forever have memories of her hospitality. We thank God for not only the quality of life she was blessed with but the quality of life in Jesus she lived. This virtuous lady is now receiving her crown of rubies. His vigorous lobbying efforts helped pass oil and gas legalization in Arkansas before returning to the Appalachian Mountains that he called home to pursue family business interests and activities that he loved. She was president of the Food Bank, a member of the Home Mission and former member of First Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Dante, Va. She was a member of Harmonettes Gospel Choir. She was a lifelong resident of Konnarock and the daughter of the late William Leopard and Rosa Hash Trivett. She was an active member of Damascus Senior Citizens and a member of Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Shumate and a son, Odell Shumate. She is survived by three daughters, Geneva Miller of Lansing, N.C., Pauline King of Montross, Va., and Shirley Petrucci of Kennett Square, Pa.; three sons, Vernon Shumate of Elverson, Pa., J.C. Miss Vencill, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 7, 1920, a daughter of the late Arleigh G. and Bessie M. Vencill, and had always made her home in the Belfast Community of Russell County. She graduated from Lebanon High School and Radford University and taught in Russell and Tazewell County schools before taking disability retirement in 1979, having taught 39 years. She taught primary grades because little children were so special to her. She was a member of Belfast United Methodist Church from her youth and served in many capacities. She was loving and loyal to her family and will be sadly missed.
