Lexie Peters Barker Mrs. Lexie Peters Barker, 94, of Bristol, Va., died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born in West Virginia and had lived most of her life in Washington County, Va. She attended Radford College and was a retired teacher having taught in Washington County, Va., for many years. She was a member of the Abingdon Bible Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Jay S. Barker. She is survived by: one son, J.R. Barker, Bluff City, Tenn.; one brother, J.L. Peters, Washington; two sisters, Thelma Freeman, Michigan, and Eva Sorah, Washington County, Va.; three grandchildren, James R. Barker, Debbi Messer and Julie B. Blevins, 74, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the home of her sister in Spotsylvania, Va., after a long, courageous struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born in Fuget, Ky., and had lived in College Park, Md., for several years before moving to Green Cove in 1980. She was a member of Kent Baptist Church in Landover, Md. She was preceded in death by her parents, Trigg and Ruby McKenzie; two sisters, Pauline Blair and Alline Rutledge; two brothers, James Allen McKenzie and Maxwell McKenzie; and one great-nephew, Ryan Rodgers. Graybeal and was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lee Graybeal Sr., that went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith. Mrs. Hill, 63, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Washington County, the daughter of the late Henry and Pauline Fields Lampkins. She spent several years traveling with her husband and family while Mr. Hill was serving the Army. In 1978, she returned to Washington County after her husband's retirement. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and had a passion for collecting brass trinkets. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alberta Goode. She is survived by her husband, Fred D. Hill Sr.; her son, Fred D. Hill Jr. of Abingdon; her daughters, Regina H. Skipper of Annapolis, Md.; three brothers, Harry Lee Lampkins and Robert Lampkins, both of Glade Spring, and Henry Lampkins of Abingdon. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Destiny. Charles Stuard Hipps HURLEY, Va. -- Charles Stuard Hipps, 77, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County on March 28, 1922, the son of the late Charlie M. Hipps and Mary Alice Cooper Hipps, he was a member of Hurley Church of God in Jesus Name. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, having received the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal, the American Theater Service Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon. He was a member of VFW 7360, the American Legion John Ratliff Post 164 of Grundy, Va., was the organizer of the Buchanan County Rescue Squad, where he was an emergency medical technician. He was a retired coal miner. Mr. Hipps was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Darrell Hipps, Coy Hipps, Clark Hipps and Crawford Hipps; one sister, Pearl Tester; and one half-brother, Denver Hipps. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Annie Mae Justus Hipps of Hurley; two daughters, Mrs. Lonzo (Ruth) Lester of Grundy and Mrs. Jim (June) Packard of Lakeland, Fla.; four sons, Benny Hipps and Donnie Hipps, of Frederick, Md., Teddy Hipps of Hurley, and Tommy Hipps and wife, Leslie, of Wakersville, Md. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Upon retirement, he was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross and numerous church groups, worked in disaster areas and building homes and churches in foreign countries and the United States of America. Mr. Gray was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served on several committees, taught Sunday school, including the Silent Friends Class, and was past chairman of the Board of Deacons. McReynolds, 86, went to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Bristol Nursing Home in Bristol, Tenn. She was born in Dungannon, Va., the daughter of the late Charles and Bessie Powers Doyle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiley McReynolds, and her son, Dewey McReynolds. She was loved so much and will be greatly missed by her family. Mrs. McReynolds is survived by her daughters, Betty Hall of Castlewood, Sue Miley of Yorktown, Va., and Judy McReynolds of Bristol, Tenn.; her sister, Nellie Cooper of Newport News, Va.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. A committal service will be held Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, with friends serving as pallbearers. Charles Rutherford Mr. Charles "Chuck" Rutherford, 80, of 1875 Lee Highway, Apartment 52, Bristol, Va., died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Davy, W.Va., and was a long-time resident of Welch, W.Va., Charleston, W.Va., and Roanoke, Va., residing in Bristol since 1966. He was a retired employee of Flowers Bakery, formerly Hechts and Purity Maid, and was a former board member of Purity Bakery Credit Union. Mr. Rutherford was a member of East Bristol Church of Christ. Music was his passion; having been a participant in the first Bristol Country Music Days Celebration. He was a former leader of the "Hilltop Gang" on WELC Radio, Welch. He locally played with the Rhythm Master's and The Spice of Life "Band" and was a regular musician at Genes Barber Shop on State Street. He had also played at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Va. Mr. Rutherford will be sadly missed by his many relatives and friends. Mr. Rutherford is survived by his wife, Katherine Davis Rutherford of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol S. and William "Bill" Roark of Bristol, Va., and Rita G. and Donn A. Fawley, of Stephens City, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Cheryl M. Rutherford of Denton, Texas, and Fred and Karla Rutherford of Amarillo, Texas; nine special grandchildren, Dana M. Wells, Garek R. Fawley, Kreg D. Rutherford, Blake D. Rutherford, Ryan M. Rutherford, Brock J. Rutherford, Billy C. Roark II, Brian L. Roark and Bradley A. Hershel Burette Scott Sr. NORTON -- Hershel Burette Scott Sr., 72, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, from his home at 226 Eleventh St. Mr. Scott was born March 27, 1928, in Blackwood, Va., and had been a lifelong resident of Norton and Wise County. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of VFW Post 4301 and DAV Chapter 56. He was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Freedom of Worship Church in Norton. Mr. Scott was a retired coal miner with the Paramount Coal Company with 14 years of service. He loved hunting, fishing and the High Knob Mountains. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Lousade Scott; and two sisters, Bessie Mae Scott Peters and Eula Scott Terry. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Thacker Scott; four sons and daughters-in-law, Cossie Wayne and Kathy Scottof Norton, Hershel B. and Tootie Scott Jr. of Norton, Marcus Scott of Wise and Brian Scott of Norton; and daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Charles Jones Jr. of Norton, Brenda and Joe Tolliver of Panama City, Fla., and Susan and Terry Ray of Hopkinsville, Ky. There are four grandsons; five granddaughters; three step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; two brothers, James Scott of West Milton, Ohio, and Albert Scott of Dayton, Ohio; and three sisters, Carrie Thacker and Geneva Williams, both of Norton, and Betty Jo Head of Panama City. Dorothy Fisher Warlick MEADOWVIEW -- Mrs. Dorothy Fisher Warlick, 74, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and John Vannoy. She was born in Stanley, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Theodore Fisher and Eva O'Dell Fisher. She was the widow of Robert Cornelius Warlick. Mrs. Warlick had lived in the Fayetteville, N.C., area for many years before moving to Washington County eight years ago. She was a retired employee of the Black & Decker Co. Additional survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Libby and Walter Gaskins of Fayetteville; three grandchildren, Christina Waters of Virginia Beach, Va., Jody Thompson of Fayetteville and Michelle Seymour of Anderson Creek, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren.
