Born in Washington County, he was a son of the late Clyde Marvin Belcher Sr. and Annie Jane Plummer. Mr. Belcher was an active member of the Glade Spring Volunteer Lifesaving Crew, serving as second lieutenant, and also the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as sergeant. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Belcher; a son, Timothy "Shane" Belcher and a daughter, Leigh Ann Belcher, both of the home; two brothers, Ellis Belcher and Clyde Belcher, both of Abingdon; a sister, Brenda Griffin of Tallahassee, Florida; his stepfather, Robert "Bob" Davenport of Glade Spring; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tommy Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Glade Spring Volunteer Lifesaving Crew or to the Glade Spring Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former resident of Abingdon and a graduate of Abingdon High School and Hiwassee College. He had also attended the University of Tennessee. He was employed by Bradens in Knoxville. He was the son of Mary R. Branson of Abingdon and the late Joseph (Jake) Branson of Abingdon. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Mary Y. Branson; two sons, James E. Branson II and Charles Christopher Branson, both of Knoxville; three brothers, Robert Wayne Branson, Lenoir, N.C., Joseph Wiley Branson, Newport News, Va., and John D. Mr. Hilton was born in Sullivan County, where he resided most of his life. He was owner of Hilton Construction, working as a self-employed building contractor until his retirement in 1984. He was a former member of Tri-City Evangelical Methodist Church where he was a deacon. Mr. Hilton sang throughout the area with his family in gospel music for more than 50 years. Born Sept. 22, 1910, in Drill, Va., she was a daughter of the late Lilburn Richard and Ida Belle Baldwin Hess. She had resided in the Drill area most of her life and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Chester Israel; one son, Bobby Israel; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Israel; four brothers, Hurley Hess, Chester Hess, Lee Hess and Clyde Hess; and four sisters, Bertha Hess, Velva Amos, Dixie Smith and Carlie Boyd. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Nickels Jr. WATERFORD, Va. -- William Washington Nickels Jr. died Feb. 1, 2001, at his home. Born in Bristol, Tenn., he was educated at The McCallie School in Chattanooga and at Davidson College, Duke University and the University of Virginia School of Law, from which he received an LL.B degree in 1950. He practiced law in Loudoun for many years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, reaching the rank of lieutenant, j.g. Following the war and the completion of his education, he moved to Leesburg and later to Waterford. For a time, Mr. Nickels served as mayor of Leesburg. He was a president of the Loudoun Bar Association, an ordained deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church. For a time he was a trustee of the Catoctin Presbyterian Church in Waterford, served in a number of capacities in the Waterford Foundation, including a term as its president, was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, served on the Board of Directors of the Loudoun Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and was a Mason. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Becker Nickels; children, Margaret N. Larsen of Waterford, William Washington Nickels III of Orange, Mary Beth Roberts of Richmond and Harry Becker Nickels of Lincoln; a brother, George Nickels; a sister, Peggy Yarbro; and 10 grandchildren. A native of Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Bertha Blankenship Mitchell. She was a homemaker, a home health aide and a member of the Lick Creek Freewill Baptist Church. Tom was educated in The Baylor School and received his BS in civil engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1969. After serving in Vietnam as a first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, he attended Central Florida University, earning his MBA in 1975. Until the time of his illness, Tom worked as a project manager with Bell South where he enjoyed 24 years with colleagues who became his closest friends. Carson Columbus Ratliff GRUNDY, Va. -- Carson Columbus "Lum" Ratliff, 88 years of age, of the Little Prater Section, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Charlie Reece and Cosby Fields Ratliff. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Little Prater Church of Christ and a retired, self-employed trucker. Mr. Ratliff was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle McClanahan Ratliff, May 24, 2000. He is survived by three daughters, Pauline Lester and husband Charles Lester, Big Rock, Va., Beulah Ann Dunlap and husband Jerry Dunlap, Grundy, and Blanche Thompson and husband Jerry Thompson, Grundy; five sons, Eugene Ratliff and wife Elowese Ratliff, Haysi, Va., Vernon Ratliff and wife Sharon Ratliff, Grundy, Clinton Ratliff and wife Ann Ratliff, Rhoadesville, Va., Larry Ratliff and wife Jean Ratliff, Nacogdoches, Texas, and Ray Ratliff and wife Sue Ratliff, Grundy; two sisters, Clementine Gore, Akron, Ohio, and Hazel Anderson, Grundy; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Ida Ratliff, Cora Colley, Eliza Dales, Sarah Jane Compton and Maxie Ratliff; and two brothers, Henry and Bethley Ratliff. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Michael Trent officiating with burial to follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Saturday evening at 6 p.m. with a song service at 7 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Clecoe Ratliff, Monacoe Ratliff, Ronnie Ratliff, Gregory Lester, Michael Dunlap, Robert Dotson and Matt Heldreth. Nell Remines Smith ABINGDON, Va. -- Nell Remines Smith, formerly of Grundy, Va., passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, following a short illness. Born in Grundy, she was a daughter of the late Professor Milton William and Margaret Fleming Remines. She was a lifelong resident of Grundy prior to moving to Abingdon and was a member of the Presbyterian church. She was a graduate of Radford Teachers College and a former school teacher. She was a retired automobile dealer. She and her late husband, Harold W. Smith, were the owners and operators of Grundy Ford and later Harold W. Smith Ford Dealership. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Whitley Smith, Nov. 12, 1989; her daughter, Peggy Smith Persin, Oct. 20, 1983; and two brothers, Harold Milton Remines and Clyde W. Remines. She is survived by two sisters, Catherine McCarthy, Fairfax, Va., and Margaret Danaher, Alexandria, Va.; and one brother, Joe Remines, Denver, Colorado. Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Mountain Valley Memorial Park with Evangelist Clarence Greenleaf officiating with entombment to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.
