Stewart TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ronald Bentley Stewart, director of technical services for the KUAT Communications Group in Tucson and former KET deputy executive director, died Wednesday in Tucson following a brief illness. Mr. Stewart joined KUAT in 1978 as assistant director for technical services of the KUAT Communications Group, an educational broadcast and production resource of the University of Arizona. As director of technical services he was responsible for the engineering operation of KUAT-TV, KUAT Productions and KUAT Radio. From 1963 to 1975, he designed and was responsible for the technical operation of the Kentucky Educational Television Network. An engineering visionary, Mr. Stewart overcame the technical problems inherent in eastern Kentucky's mountainous terrain and designed a system of transmitters that provided service to the entire state, making KET the largest ETV network in the United States and second only to NHK in Japan as the world's largest TV network. In 1975, Mr. Stewart left KET to pursue his dream of owning a helicopter and hot air balloon company. With Bill Rhoads, a close friend and former KET associate, he formed Rotair Inc., an aircraft charter company that provided aerial engineering, aerial photography services and executive transportation through a small helicopter fleet and advertising promotions and passenger rides with hot air balloons. After a year in the air charter business, he realized that his true interests were in television engineering. He became assistant director for engineering for WOSU AM,FM, TV at Ohio State University in Columbus. Once more in the broadcast industry, he received numerous offers to relocate. Because of its scenic beauty and warm climate, he chose Tucson and KUAT. Aside from his KUAT responsibilities, Mr. Stewart was one of the first hot air balloonists in the area and helped establish the first hot air balloon club in the Tucson area. His exploits as "Cap'n Ron" in Arizona are legendary. He became the best-known hot air balloon pilot in the Arizona balloon races and for several years was an official in the world's largest annual balloon event, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Stewart was selected as a member of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project in 1954. He held the highest security clearances and was involved in the utilization and adaptation of the atomic and hydrogen bombs for use by Air Force and Naval aircraft. A graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Engineering, Mr. Stewart was born in Jenkins, Ky., the son of George Lee and Myrtle Bentley Stewart, graduating high school there with the highest of honors and a presidential appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
