Adkins PAINTLICK, Va. -- Mrs. Hester H. Adkins, 79, died Thursday, Jan 25, 2001, at a Richlands, Va., hospital. She was born in Boone County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Tom and Mirla Brown Holsten, both West Virginia natives. She had made her home in the Paintlick area the past 41 years and was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Dencal Adkins; and one grandson, R. Greg Watson. Survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Daisy) Watson of Paintlock and Mrs. Patsy Karen Aliff of Waco, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Glenna Atha and husband, Joe, of Van, W.Va., and Mrs. Flavie Linville of Van; three grandchildren, Karen Welch of Waco, Cindy Welch of Atlanta, Ga., and Alicia Welch of Everett, Wash.; two nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces; one great-nephew; one great-great-nephew; and a special caregiver, Sherry Myer also survive. Born in McClure, Va., he was a former resident of Clinchco and Bristol, Va. He was retired from the Clinchfield Railroad, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and of the Baptist faith. His wife, Cora Vanover and four sons, Walter, Virgil, James and Franklin Lewis Vanover preceded Mr. Vanover in death. She was born Dec. 16, 1908, in the Cove section of Tazewell County, Va., and resided the majority of her life in Belfast. She was a daughter of the late Shade Augustus and Agnes Brown White. Mrs. White was a registered nurse employed by Mattie Williams Hospital for many years. She was actively involved with the family farm. She was of the Methodist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Thompson White; four sisters, Juanita Dangerfield, Lucille White, Zarilda Cox and Virginia Redwine; three brothers, Orville White, Gus White and J.J. White; and one grandson, Charles Thompson White. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include one daughter, Genevieve White Beavers and husband, Ross J. Born in Big Stone Gap, Va., on May 21, 1915, he has been a resident of Kingsport since 1935. Mr. Bentley was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Franklin Printing Company with over 46 years of service. He had been a member of Lynn Garden Evangelical Presbyterian Church since 1952. Mr. Bentley was a 50-plus year member of Kingsport Masonic Lodge 688, Lynn Bachman Chapter, a member of American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Leora Bentley and Harry and Gertrude Wallace; and one brother, H.C. She attended Tennessee High School, where she was salutatorian of the Class of 1943. She attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., and then King College in Bristol, Tenn., where she majored in French. She was a great lover of reading, words of all kinds and languages, especially her beloved French. She was a member of the Thomas Wolfe Society and collected editions of that author's books and other Wolfe memorabilia. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church for most of her life. From 1973 until 1988, she was owner and member of George Thrasher Shoes in downtown Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her father, Francis Fleenor Comerford, her uncle, James E. Fulwider, her aunt, Nora Fulwider, and her mother, Anna Thomas, all of Bristol. He is survived by one brother, Ira Banner (Chuck) Shortt, San Diego, Calif.; four daughters, Sue Thomason, Clintwood, Rebecca Hughes, Pound, Va., Bethel Steele, Columbia, South Carolina, and Mitzie Arnold, Albuquerque, New Mexico; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren survive him. Mr. Shortt was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He was the first commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in Dickenson County Post 8979, chartered in 1947. He was a member of Clintwood Baptist Church. Mr. Shortt was a 50-plus-year member of Clintwood Virginia Masonic Lodge 66 and Dickenson County VFW 8979. He was also a member of Clintwood Lions Club and a member of Dickenson County Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1798. He directed and managed steam line construction on four defense installations prior to his entry into World War II. He was a maintenance supervisor on heavy equipment for Clinchfield Coal Company. Mr. Shortt was also a Mayor of Town of Clintwood, Va., two terms, 1956-59. He served two terms on the Clintwood Town Council. He served as City Manager of Pikeville, Ky. During Mr. Shortt's employment as City Manager of the City of Pikeville, the city achieved the status of All American City, all Kentucky City and Model City. He served as Town manager of Big Stone Gap, Va. Mr. Shortt has worked for the last 20 years in the field of public relations and industrial development.
