She was born in Saltville, the daughter of the late Edward and Ollie Booth. She was a member of the Main Street Christian Church and a charter member of the Saltville Home Demonstration Club. Virgie was a beloved wife, mother and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Minister Elbert Roy Arnold; two sons, Elbert R. "Buck" Arnold and Richard A. "Jack" Arnold; six brothers, Hack Booth, Eugene Booth, Malcolm Booth, L.B. Booth, Frank Booth and Sylvester Booth. Survivors: five sons and six daughters-in-law: H.V. Margaret Lenior Buchanan MARION, Va. -- Margaret Lenior Buchanan, 88, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Birdmont Manor Nursing Home in Wytheville, Va. Miss Buchanan was born at Ellendale, Rich Valley Smyth County, Va., May 24, 1912. She was the daughter of Jessie Dunn Buchanan and Thomas Harold Buchanan (T. Harry). She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Harold, Sam G., Jim C. and one brother who died at birth. At the age of 12, she gave her heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and joined the Rich Valley Presbyterian Church. From her parents and Sunday School teachers, she learned Christian principles. She became a member of Royal Oak Presbyterian Church in Marion in 1938. She was an active member of this church, serving mainly as leader of youth for more than 20 years. She received her elementary education in the Smyth County School System, graduating from Rich Valley High School. She received a normal professional teaching certificate from Fredericksburg Teachers College, which is now Mary Washington College, and a degree in elementary education from Madison College, which is now James Madison University. She taught in Smyth County for over 41 years. For two years, she was director of Christian education in Pulaski Presbyterian Church in Pulaski, Va. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Lib Buchanan and Sis Buchanan, both of Marion; one nephew, Jimmy Buchanan and daughter, Megan; three nieces, Libby Sprinkle and husband, Bart, and their children, Cathy, Phillip and wife, Sherri, and their daughter Camille; Patty Robinson and husband, Paul, and their children, Margaret Anne, Caroline and Paul Craig, and Susie Henry and husband, Daryl, and their children, Sarah, D.J. and Thomas; and many cousins, including Rosie and Jack McCarty. He was born at Bartley, W.Va., the son of the late Chat and Elizabeth Mitchell Christian. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA District 20. He worked for Island Creek Coal Co.'s Beatrice Mine, was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in Europe. He was a member of Sandy River American Legion Post 175, of Bradshaw. He was the last survivor of a family of 12 children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Jim, John, Doc and Barney Christian; seven sisters, Sally Bellamy, Lessie Stoll, Mary McIntosh, Mandy Edgell, Marie Matney, Leona King and Ellie Christian, an infant. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He founded Hayes Amoco service station, which he owned and operated for 20 years prior to his retirement. He was born in West Virginia and was a son of the late William McKinley and Ann Hite Largen, both West Virginia natives. He was a 1942 graduate of Big Creek High School and a graduate of West Virginia University in the top ten of his class. He had a B.S. degree in electrical engineering, was a math major and a student math instructor. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Etta Kappa Nu, engineering fraternities. He was a retired electrical engineer, businessman, former owner and manager of Kelsey Tire and McKelsey Land Co. in Richlands. He had made his home in the Richlands area most of his life and was a member of the Richlands First United Methodist Church. Mr. Largen served in various civic organizations and was past president of Richlands Jaycees, Richlands Chamber of Commerce and Richlands Kiwanis Club. He had also served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother. He attended Tennessee High School where he was a four-letter athlete in tennis, track, basketball and football. In 1950, he was instrumental in leading the Tennessee High School Vikings football team, as their quarterback, to their first Big five Championship since 1929. He was also named a member to Bristol's 1950 All-City Team, an honor recognizing players who were the best at their positions. He later proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He then relocated to Columbia, where he worked for the Richaland County DHEC for a number of years. He was born in Bristol, Tenn., and was the son of the late Giles and Lena Musick Ball. He attended Tennessee High School where he was a four-letter athlete in tennis, track, basketball and football. In 1950, he was instrumental in leading the Tennessee High School Vikings football team, as their quarterback, to their first Big Five championship since 1929. He was also named a member of Bristol's 1950 All-City Team, an honor recognizing players who were the best at their positions. He later proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He then relocated to Columbia, where he worked for the Richland County DHEC for a number of years. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Vince and Cornelia Carmack Jessee. Miss Jessee was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, Elizabethton. In 1990, she was presented an award for 25 years of service from Tennessee Vocational Training Center. In 1991, she moved to Tallahassee and participated in the Easter Seal Program for five years. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, she lived at home for two years before becoming a resident of Tallahassee Development Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Winfield Scott and Bertha Gilmer Jessee, Lebanon, and James Cornelius and Mayme Stone Carmack, Bristol, Va. Survivors include: one sister, Julia Jessee, Gainesville, Ga.; three nieces, Caroline Bradford, Red Cliff, Colo., Beverlee Macey and Janis Hoge, both of Duluth, Ga.; one nephew, Walter Jessee Brumit, Greeneville, Tenn.; three great-nieces, Emily Brumit, Jessee and Lyle Hoge; and one great-nephew, Lucas Brumit Macey. Born Feb. 27, 1928, in Swords Creek, Va., she was a daughter of the late William Arthur and Laura Sample Vance. She had resided in Honaker all of her life before moving to Lebanon 14 years ago. She was a 1945 graduate of Honaker High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Honaker, Va. She was co-founder of Honaker Florist and owned and operated City Grill in Honaker. She was a former teacher at Honaker Elementary School. She was a 41-year charter member and past noble grand of Countiss Rebekah 31 of Honaker and received the Declaration of Chivalry. She was voted 1984 Rebekah of the Year. Active in civic affairs, she received the Honaker Band Booster five years President Award, the Redbud Festival Award, the Honaker Merchants Association Award for dedicated service to the community and chairman of the annual Christmas parade, Outstanding Woman of the Year, first runner-up presented by the Honaker Jaycettes, Award from the Honaker Jaycees for invaluable benefits and cooperation and 1986 Woman of the Year for community service presented by the Honaker Woman's Civic Club. The most honorable award of all was the one she received for being the world's greatest wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and mother-in-law. She went above and beyond her role to the greatest of all. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Miller in 1985, and one son, William David Miller in 1948. On Jan. 7, 1942, she married Clarence R. "Pat" Patty Jr. and together they lived in many locations across the United States. She spent 31 years in Corning, N.Y., where her husband was employed by Corning Glass Works. In January, 1984, they moved to Flat Rock, and in March 1993, they moved to Carolina Village. Throughout her married life she was active in a variety of roles including church elder, hospital auxiliary member, assistant high school guidance counselor and giving service to the visually impaired. She was a member of St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock. Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughter, Mary Lisa Abbey and her husband, David B.
