Mr. Boone, 73, of 1030 Extract St., died Friday, March 9, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Konnarock, Va., and had lived in Michigan for several years before moving back to Damascus in 1989. He was a veteran of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, serving in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was retired from Chrysler Corp. in Detroit, Mich. Mr. Boone was a member of VFW Post No. 9830 in Damascus, the Damascus Senior Citizens and the First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Milhorne Boone. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Hand Boone; five sons, Stephen Boone of Brentwood, Calif., Ronald Boone of Sterling Heights, Mich., Kenneth Boone of Northville, Mich., David Boone of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Richard Boone of Clarkston, Mich; two stepdaughters, Linda McGlamery of Abingdon, and Connie Meredith of Jamestown, N.C.; two stepsons, Charles Hand and James "Bud" Hand, both of Shady Valley, Tenn.; one sister, Noami Hite of Roanoke, Va.; one brother, Charlie Boone of Konnarock; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Peggy Fannin Cregger SUGAR GROVE, Va. -- Peggy Fannin Cregger, 56, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. Mrs. Cregger attended Marion College and graduated from Radford University with a teaching degree. She taught at the Adwolfe School for five years and was employed at the Marion Child Care. She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Fannin. Charles Edward Gray Sr. ABINGDON, Va -- Mr. Charles Edward "Ed" Gray Sr., 93, died Monday, March 12, 2001, in Abingdon Manor Home for the Aged. Mr. Gray moved to Abingdon from the Holston, Va., area and later in life moved to Damascus. He was a 1926 graduate of Greendale High School and attended Bristol Commercial College from 1927-1928, graduating in 1928. Mr. Gray was a retired businessman and farmer. In his early years, he opened a restaurant in Chilhowie, The College Inn, and a restaurant between Abingdon and Bristol, The Blue Bell Tea Room. He was an employee of Raytheon for nine years and 10 months. He started in business for himself in Abingdon, by opening Ed Gray's Esso Station and later built his own service station, Ed Gray's Gulf Station. Mr. Gray was a building contractor and organized both Graystone Heights and Bookhill Estates. He enjoyed farming in the White's Mill area north of Abingdon and, after marrying Mrs. Billie A. Gray, moved to Damascus where he enjoyed gardening and raising cattle. Mr. Gray was a caring father, always giving where he found a need. He was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his wives, Irene Bradley Byars Gray, Evelyn Nadine Brannock Gray and Billie Gordon Adams Venable Gray; a deceased brother, Jack Dudley Gray; deceased sisters, Maude Forest Gray and Pauline Kenneth Gray Maiden; and a brother-in-law, William E. Hattie was born in Fairfield County, S.C., the daughter of the late Edward and Marie Ashford Burrell. As a young woman she married and moved to Norfolk, Va., where she attended college and became a registered nurse. At age 60, she became ill and her brother, Jasper, moved her to Lebanon to take care of her. She remained in Lebanon since that time and quietly passed away at Maple Grove Health Care Center early Tuesday morning. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Simpson and her son, Lonnie Cook. She leaves to mourn one brother, Rev. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County prior to moving to Abingdon and was a member of Primitive Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Norfolk Shipyard and was a retired farmer and coal miner. Mr. McClanahan was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Hagy Williams Dotson McClanahan, Aug. 14, 2000, and by his first wife, Linda Matney McClanahan, Aug. 6, 1987. He is survived by one sister, Thelsie McClanahan Wolford, Route 1, Grundy; three stepsons, Richard Williams, Abingdon, Jesse Ray Williams, Grundy, and Gene Williams, Abingdon; one nephew, Junior Wolford; and one great-niece, Kristy Wolford. He was preceded in death by three half-sisters, Eva Wolford, Tora Dotson and Pearlie Ramey; and three half-brothers, Glenn, Roy and Willie McClanahan.
