Born in Buchanan County, Dec. 17, 1947, he was the son of Stella Johnson Adkins of Richlands, Va., and the late Andrew Jack Adkins. He was the superintendent for Basic Mining Company, an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed coon hunting and fishing and a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. He was also a loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Sullivan; and one brother, Billie Sullivan. In addition to his mother, Stella Johnson Adkins of Richlands, he is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, May Estep Adkins of Hurley; two daughters, Tammy Jo Adkins and Wendy Michelle Adkins, both of Arlington, Va.; and two sisters, Maggie Fletcher and Mable Ruble, both of Grundy, Va. He was employed as an equipment maintenance foreman for 20 years for Spokane County and seven years with Key Tronic Corporation. Harriet Ebersole Calfee ABINGDON, Va. -- Harriet Ebersole Calfee, 86, a well-known resident of Abingdon, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn. She was a native of King, Pa., who lived in Imler, Pa., before attending the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Altoona, Pa. She came to Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon from Grace Hospital in Richmond, Va., on Sept. 15, 1941. She was superintendent of nursing at Johnston Memorial for 30 years. She took a military leave of absence to serve in the U.S. Army Nurse's Corps during World War II. She was a member of the American Nurses Association and had served two times as the president of District I; she was a member of the National League of Nursing Educators. She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church who joined the United Methodist Women in 1941 and served as their president two times. She wrote the history of United Methodist Women in 1997. She was also a member of the Ladies Bible Class from 1941 to 1999 and had served as president for seven years. She was the widow of Alvin Luther Calfee. Survivors include one brother, John Emerson Ebersole I of Imler; one stepdaughter, Maxine Calfee Hilton and husband Donald E. Hilton, both of Abingdon; two step-grandchildren, Helen Calfee Hilton Shupe and husband John R. Shupe, both of Abingdon, and Howard Schaffer Hilton and wife Pamela C. Hilton, both of Alpharetta, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Calfee Shupe, Alexandria Hilton and Grant Hilton; and several nieces and nephews. "Buck" Hamlin Jr., 78, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Hamlin was a former resindent of Old Greenwich, Conn. He is a son of the late Charles M. and Marie Haines Hamlin, Bristol. Mr. Hamlin was employed in the furniture manufacturing industry for many years. He was retired from Empire Furniture Company and was a former superintendent at Bristol Door and Lumber Company. He was a World War II Army veteran who served with the 132nd Combat Engineers, 77th Division in the South Pacific. Mr. Hamlin was a member of the Unaka Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Simerly had been employed by Unisys of Bristol. Mr. Simerly was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a U.S. Army Air Force veteran having served in World War II. He was also a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, East Tennessee chapter. Mr. Simerly was a POW during World War II for 14 months. William Towe Sr. MOSHEIM, Tenn. -- William "Bill" Wayne Towe Sr., of Magnolia St., passed away Friday night, March 16th, 2001, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, owned and operated Bill's Market for a number of years, was retired from Hurd Lock, and most recently, worked as a security guard at Five Rivers. Mr. Towe served the newly formed Town of Mosheim as an alderman in 1974-76, served as past president of Mosheim Elementary School PTA and was instrumental in helping acquire the new Mosheim Elementary School building. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Emily F. Towe; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Lynn and Mike Bueck of Mohawk, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, William Wayne and Julie Towe of Bristol, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Chasta Dawn Hamilton of Mohawk; and two half-sisters, Charlotte Loy and Marie Lee Swinney, both of LaFollette, Tenn.; and an aunt, Retha Robinson of Lake City, Tenn. She was a 1961 graduate of Honaker High School. She had been employed by Honaker Mills for 26 years until its closing, Old Rosedale Market for eight years, and had hoped to retire from Food City, where she had been working for the past six years. Nola Ball Kiser CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- Nola Ball Kiser, 80, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Montgomery Regional Hospital, where she died a Baptist and Democrat. A graduate of Johnson City Business College with a B.S., she received her master's degree from Radford University in English and library science. Her long career as an educator began in Buchanan County where she worked as a secretary, bookkeeper, merchant and business teacher, and also selling tickets to Stanley Brothers Concerts. In 1969, she moved to Christiansburg where she became librarian at Christiansburg High School, a position she held until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Christiansburg. The daughter of the late Elbert H. and Hattie Ball, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Roscoe, Cotton and Pasco; and sisters, Edith and Ruby Lucille. She is survived by a daughter, Sue Breeding, Christiansburg; a grandson, Benny H. Breeding III, Dublin, Va.; a great-grandson, Benjamin Forbes, Radford; a brother, Dr. B.W. Ball, Decatur, Ga.; sisters, Mary Jo Rogalski, Twinsburg, Ohio, and Mabel Mihaley, Charlottesville; special nieces and beloved friends, as well as special friends, Louise, Viola and Lois; and her most loyal companion for the last three years, "Miss Lucy." David Lynn Malone BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. -- David Lynn Malone, 48, went to be with the Lord on March 18, 2001, after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. He was born in Bristol, Va., a son of Howard L. and Ruth Crowe Malone. He was owner and proprietor of Malone Farm Greenhouse. David was a member of Blountville United Methodist Church and a former member of Hulls Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a past president and current member at the Farmers Association for Retail Marketers. He was a graduate of both Hiwassee College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. McMurray BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. -- Hubert Clinton McMurray, 85, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Bristol Nursing Home at 10:40 p.m., after a period of declining health. Hubert was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Scott County, Va., to the late Rueben and Elizabeth McClain McMurray. Hubert was retired from the Tennessee Eastman Company after 41 years of service. He was a member of Gunnings Baptist Church. Other than his parents, Hubert was preceded in death by his son, Douglas McMurray; two sisters, Maggie and Sibbie; and four brothers, Walter, Homer, Sylvan and Forest. Mr. Wyatt, 75, of 246 Wallace Lane, Bristol, Tenn., died on Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Washington County, Va., and son of the late Joe and Susie Rebecca Smith Wyatt. He was a self-employed painting contractor and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Central Europe under the 100th Infantry Division, 399th Infantry Regiment. Some of his citations include: World War II Victory Medal, two Bronze Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge, and European Theater Ribbon; he was also a Purple Heart recipient. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Juanita K.
